When I saw this challenge my first thought was to involve a Chess set but I wanted to have something different invovled. Rather than have the pieces on a Chess board I placed them on what is supposed to be a large board and tried to get across more of a battle feeling - like when the All Blacks do the Haka to a rival rugby team!

It's a shame the white pieces are actually a cream colour. My Photoshop skills aren't up to the stage where I could make them white without being concerned of breaking the challenge rules.

Editing Steps:
Convert from RAW
Curves
Selective curves
Spot editing to remove minor blemishes and reflections

Post Challenge:
Well, I'm not sure what I learnt from this one. Perhaps to experiment more in photoshop? Perhaps that in challenges where there is confusion over exactly what is a DNMC then be sure that your image fits in your mind.

Another photo of chess pieces??? Whatever. The photo meets the challenge. The focus is fine. The subject matter lacks originality. Good luck in future challenges.

This would have been over the top if the chess pieces on black where actually white

Cool idea and I like the DOF here, but it just looks strange to me with the pieces all set up but not on an actual chess board.

Good idea. I would have liked it more if the pieces in the foreground were whiter though, they are a bit too yellowish.
