Challenge: Texture (Classic Editing)
Camera: Olympus C-2100UZ
Location: Bothell, WA
Date: Jul 20, 2002
Aperture: 2.8
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/800
Date Uploaded: Jul 21, 2002

This is part of a cactus that I have been growing for around eight years now. I waited for the last bit of sun filtered through some trees in the backyard to get the golden color and then had to set it on my deck top rail and turn it just so to get the fingertips lit up the way I wanted. In addition to the great texture, I like how the shapes combine to create several geometrical planes at several different intersecting angles.

Exposure was set in manual mode to achieve the narrow DOF while properly exposing for the highlights. The image was processed in PhotoPaint to boost the saturation just a tad and of course to add some unsharp mask.

nice depth with light and shadow; background little out of focus (depth of field); good color

nice shadows, maybe crop the bottom and the left side so so the brightest and focused part of the cactus comes into the frame from the corner. it will define the texture better

For those that are just learning, like me.

Composition: Scoring in this area is based on basic composition of a picture and includes the rule of thirds, balance, cropping, and curved and diagonal lines. Subject matter that does not lend itself to the picture or otherwise unwanted is also considered here.

Originality: Scoring in this area is based on pictures or concepts that I have seen, as well as how much effort you have invested in the picture. Usually a little something that sets it aside from a snapshot. Does it make me want to come back for another look? You know things like that.

Technical Aspects: Focus, exposure, lighting, and other special effects (done by the camera), and post processing are all considered in this category.

Meets Challenge: This is based on my interpretation of if you, have/have not, met the challenge. This is fairly simple but quite important for this site.

There are many sites that can give you assistance in achieving better skills in photography, but I think the best way to learn is to take pictures and show them to other people. Believe me when it is a good one you will know it.

Good luck!

Interesting and dramatic lighting. Very nice.

This is great... the lighting and shadows cast on this cactus are quite nice... my only critique on this image is that I would have preferred to see a little less darkness across the bottom of the frame. I think that a slightly higher camera angle would have made two improvements here... first, it would have removed the dark band across the bottom of the frame... secondly, it would have kept the top of the cactus from being so close to the top edge of the frame. It is a little too close for comfort at the top... a little breathing room there would be nice :) = 8 - jmsetzler

I did a similar photo though I like yours better. Nice use of light and dof.

Nice lighting and composition, nice texture. Wish I were a tad bit closer to the subject... but nice job!

If that is "Texture" i don't know what is
07/23/2002 01:11:00 PM
the lighting in this photo makes it appealing to the eye more than the texture but it is a great shot and the lighting is what makes the texture stand out. great job!

like the depth

I love the lighting on this. It is simple, and easy to look at. Not so easy to touch, though. :-) karmat

oooooh such texture to these.

You should have cropped this to get rid of some of the empty black space and cactus that was shaded. Good subject.

I really like this idea, just wish there was a tad bit more light around the rest of the cactus. I think it's really neat!
07/22/2002 07:52:00 PM
Dramatic photo. I know it would have been hard, but it would have been nice if the back cactus were sharp also.

Creative light, good texture. Kee
