Real women's hair, braided together. The need of a flash complicated things.

I am so disappointed that you didn't place much higher. I love this image, and it is definitely one of my favorites.

I appreciate very much all the good and helpful comments I received this week. I have to confess I was baffled at the results I obtained with my entry this last week. I honestly didn't entertain the illusion as a real possibility of ending in the top 10, but I do not understand ending this low in the list, trying hard to be objective about the other pictures presented. With my previous submissions I considered the results acceptable, even a little surprising in one of them, but for me the voting process and criteria applied has become an utter mystery. Quite discouraging, at first. I'll leave this behind me for now and wait for this week's results.

Thank you gr8photos for your supporting comment, what can I say? I absolutely agree with you... :)

missing a focal point; texture is interesting though

Very creative idea! I almost did hair too, but never thought up braiding two together! Fits the challege well. Good job!

Neat-o! Although I would have probably eliminated the two side braids. The point is made well enough with the center one, and it would have made the black and brown hair more touchable. Maybe zoom in closer...

Funny, but I'd like it to be sharper ... 4 sjgleah

This is an interesting lesson in how difficult it can be to photograph textures in black... this image looks good, but the lighting has caused a lot of detail washout in the black hair. I also think the perfectly vertical braids could possibly make a higher impact on the viewer if they were diagonal in the frame... = 5 - jmsetzler

That is a very interesting idea! A nice transition of colours and textures!

Very good picture. I like your idea and the way you carried it out. One idea I had would be to position the brown braid against the black background and the black braid in front of the brown, but I like your way of doing it also.

this is a wonderful idea! have you considered sending your shot to bennetton? they might be interested! i certainly have this in my top 5 list and will add it to my favorites when the voting is over. -- gr8photos (10)

I really like the concept of this shot. Reminds me of a hair coloring commercial. The only reason I didn't give you a 10 was the black hair, at the top and bottom is sooo black, definition is lost. I'm guessing, but I think a flash was used to create the lighting, strong diffused light would have shown the black more, then flash it to give your accent. I really like the mixed braid, especially the strand of black and brown hair. Guess you figured it out, you got a 9, Swash

That's great! Very creative 7

I think it would be better if ponny tails are closer to each other and photo is closed up on them.

a great idea, but needs something more, something to give it more interest. the image is composed entirely of vertical lines, which gets tiring to look at, so a different composition could help a lot. also, your flash kind of killed the texture. try lighting from the side instead of straight on.

This was creative. I think it would also look good if there was more texture to the hair. Looks like you used a flash that made quite a glare. Maybe more diffuse lighting without loosing the detail?
07/22/2002 09:30:00 PM
Nice job. I like the idea. I also think it would have been really cool if the one on the right was a bleached blond or something, to provide even more contrast. karmat

Okay, I see hair and braids but wonder of any context. Are these wigs? Wig shop? Don't like the black area in top left.
07/22/2002 04:06:00 PM
nice idea, benetton style. I don't know the macro capabilities of your camera, but I think a close-up of just the mixed braid and the two "ingredients" as a background would have looked a lot better for texture. 5 beegee

O'how fun. Great. Creative. Kee

I really like it but it would be better with out the streak of light down the middle. I imagine it was very to get the lighting right on black hair. Could you have diffused the light with something?
07/22/2002 02:41:00 PM
Great Idea, the lighting seems to band across the middle. - 7

closer...much closer one plait would be nice.

I love this photo, great for this challenge.

I like the contrast of the straight and wavy hair. If only you could have found someone with blonde wavy hair instead of brown.
07/22/2002 03:38:00 AM
clever concept
07/22/2002 03:07:00 AM
is that real hair?

An interesting concept, and a neato picture! 6
