crop, levels and slightly funky curves. I think this looks like an old-time map, before they knew where everything was.

Very creative. I love your technique.

Death of an onion. The Onion skin has spoke like lines instead of the normal radial ones, very creative. A differant way of looking at a common obbject. I also like softer treatment contrasting with the hard line of the grains.

This is like one of those images where they show all of the parts "blown apart" so you can see how it all goes together.

I love the textures.

Hey Don, this is very cool. I missed it somehow. I really like the textures here. Kinda reminds me of Ansel Adams' photo of a rose against wood grain. Except this is an onion. Obviously :-) Anyway, well done!

Never noticed this shot, but it is quite stunning. The different competing lines. Different items, same type of textures. Ingenious idea.

Wow. That is a fantastic image. It's abstract in a sense yet tenable. The muted colors add a lot of warmth to the two familiar textures.

Wow. A piece of wood and the skin of an onion. With the skill of the masters, you managed to remove the mundane and let your artistry unfold into a perfectly blended world of crisp detail, texture, lines and color. Somehow this image brings to my mind the painting of Van Gogh's boot...the simple and mundane transformed into timeless art. Beautiful!

This is a lovely image, rustic and abstract. Very nice work as regards the textures, colour and overall composition.

The more still lifes I see, the more respect I have for film photography. I think that, if this were shot with film, the top and bottom left corners would have retained lots of interesting semi tones. Check this out, for example: //www.photosight.ru/photo.php?photoid=991824&ref=author

my thought exactly! perhaps it being an abstract challenge made voters more tolerant of the lack of a subject, the flatness, etc. Then again, I've been known to bomb in abstract challenges as well. I have no clue why this made top 20. That's why I can still suck!

Does this leave the good ship suck without a captain?

It's a canvas of a shot - all those things like cropping and balance-within-the-frame and such that I prefer to see than name, are seen and don't need to be named.

This should not have succeeded here as there are # no large fields of primary colour # no hyper-saturation # no unbroken areas without texture to set off the subject. There's hope for us yet.

You might say the understatement sets it off.

Well did.

I gave this an 8. Good use of colors/textures/patterns, especially in an 'every day thing'. The tonings applied work well, however a little bit more 'depth'/something may have made it even better and brought out the textures more, in my opinion.

Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed your take on this challenge. Very unique image with wonderful tone and texture. I had meant to comment earlier but never got back to it. I gave this a 9 and I'm pretty stingy on those. ;^) Congrat's on your top 20 finish!

Very interesting and unique! 9.

The only issue I have (minor) is the two pieces on the right. My eyes get drawn to it too much because of their high contrast with the background. I would maybe just clone those two out or lighten the dark areas of it so it matched the rest.

my first 8 to date... I just love this shot.... the way you worked the skin in with the lines of the wood show the eye of a true artist - hope you make it a print!
