Challenge: On the Beach (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Sony DSC-F717
Location: Cannon Beach, Oregon
Date: Jul 14, 2006
Aperture: f2
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/125
Galleries: Landscape, Nature
Date Uploaded: Jul 15, 2006

Taken at the north end of Cannon Beach, Oregon, five minute walk from our home, at sunset(about 9PM), at low tide. The reflective surface is an inch of water across 50 yards of beach. The person in the photo is my son, Thomas, AKA Zoomdak. Thanks Thomas for another delightful beach photo-shoot at sunset!

Post Processing: levels, color balance, neat image, USM, rotated to level horizon, crop, resize, add border.

DPC confession: the original was pretty ordinary, with just a thin band of pink/lavender above the crack in the clouds reflected onto the beach. I pushed the levels and color balance to the place where I've witnessed sunsets at low tide, when the sun reflects off the ceiling of the clouds onto the reflective surface of low tide standing waters, and everything silently shouts "Beauty!" Coastal colors sometimes jump off the color saturation map, though on July 14th when the photo was taken, the sun faded into the cloud bank evident on the horizon and thus, never had the chance to paint the ceiling of clouds and the floor of low tide. Our black lab dog was present on this photo-shoot and kept wandering into the standing water, sending ripples and chewed up pieces of driftwood into the frame, messing up the effect I was hoping for, that of serenity at sunset. Post-processing for this photo is more the photographer's fantasy. Yet, the photographer's reality in nature photography is an encounter with the design and colors of nature which at times overwhelm my senses with the sheer extravagance of beauty!

Thanks for all your vote and comments! I've been away hiking this past week, and came home to find "Low Tide" among the DPC ribbons! A delight to place among the ribbon winners, especially on my 50th entry.

Great shot, David. I am amused to read your notes, which discuss how ordinary the scene was in the original and the lengths you went to to pep it up. Compare with my bottom-of-the-heap entry jejeje... Congrats on the ribbon!

So you are saying... this image, the way God created it... was not good enough and you mucked about with a dozen different software editing options and created something that never did, nor ever will exist? So this is not really a photograph... it is graphic art... a representation of what you wish were true, not a true depiction of what was. Congrats on your ribbon....

Boo for exploiting what has to be the most ribbon-yielding beach in the world. You should be ashamed of yourself for using the secret weapon that is Cannon Beach, OR.

*Ahem*

By which I meant "Yay for your ribbon, nice shot!" Actually, I think the subject of the photo has to be the ugliest person I have ever seen. Shoulda found someone better.

Great job! Great used of color, love the reflection! I'm just a bit overwhelmed by all of the blue, which kept it from getting a 10. Gave you a 9.

Great light composition. The contrast is excellent and the smooth reflective water in the foreground give the pic a surreal feel. Color saturation is heavy but it works really well! Great shot!
