Challenge: Straight from the Camera (Advanced Editing IV*)

Location: Playground outside our house, Iceland
Date: Jul 2, 2006
Aperture: 2.8
ISO: 100

Date Uploaded: Jul 2, 2006

Well true to the challenge details, this is a jpg file straight out of the camera with the exception of the resizing, used the bicubic sharper feature during resizing and the save for web to make sure it would be less than 150 kb.

I thought IŽd give this challenge a twirl, I hate it when people always blame photoshop tricks on good results. I am a purist at heart, maybe because I am lazy and I try to do things right in camera to minimize the work I have to do in post processing.

Anyway, this is my 15 month old daughter Monika, sheŽs so cuuuuuuuute :) Well I think so anyway. We went out playing in the rain, ergo the rain clothes and her brother Alexander is in the shot too although I doubt many people will make him out in this shot, he blends in very nicely in the backround bokeh, he is looking out the back window and he is just directly right of her rain hat. Anyway, I really like this shot, I actually like all photos of my kid (well duh, who doesnŽt) and I have been afraid of posting photos of them in challenges as I am effectively blind to the quality of these photos.

As for the camera settings, I set it to monotone with a sepia toning and yellow filter, contrast and sharpness to max and this is the JPG file that came out of a RAW+JPG exposure.

This is a great shot. It transcends the 'family photo album' tag because of the deft composition and the capture of a great expression. I love the dirt on her hands. The choice of B&W combined with the classic fashion of her rainhat puts this in the realm of timelesness.

Don't hesitate to offer up more photos of your kids if they are this well done.

Sorry I didn't see this during the voting.

Highly underrated!!! A duotone as rich as this straight from the camera deserves at least a top 10!!!

A heart touching photograph. It's the little subtle things that make this image for me, such as the little dirty hands and grubby face. The use of BW/Sepia works really well and adds a lot to the emotional impact. One of a few 10s that I've given for this challenge. Excellent work!

I can see why this was validated. It is out of the camera perfection. You are the bomb. the diagonal of the sill(?) and the diagonals of his cap (and the diagonals of his collar), the distribution of dirt, all aid in conveying the mood of the child's expression. the blurred background is just more dirt, just more moody brownness. 10

8 - Good image and good capture. Really nit-picking, but the fingers on the left not cut and a little more light up onto the eyes (opportunity of course) make this even better in my opinion. Toning works very well. So many validations seems a waste of SC time in this Challenge. Very good 'straight from the camera' shot.

Great image and wonderful capture. I actually like that the focus is on the hand and not the face, brings in a different element of the picture. Nice shot - I look forward to seeing what camera and settings were used to accomplish this image.
