I shot this in the mounting yard of the races. I loved the look in the horses eyes...as if trepidation of the race ahead.

The horse was actually looking at the starting gates in the distance. And to give you the rest of the story...when the light was just about to go to release the horses...this particular horse decided to go nuts and broke the gates. He was okay but was scratched from the race. LOL!!

Hi Judi!

Greetings from the Critique Club!

This is a very nice photo, especially straight from the camera. My camera is weird and only lets me shoot in color or in sepia, so you're lucky to have a b/w right out of the camera.

What strikes me first about this photo is its point of view from behind, which is very unique and which instantly grabs my attention. The tones are also very nice, and considering you hadn't any opportunity to fiddle with them, it's even more remarkable. The composition is quite good, too. The horse's eye is in a strong position in the frame.

Some folks mentioned the ears being cut off, and I suppose it is a slight distraction to have them like that. With pp possibilities, you could either include them or crop closer to the head.

I like the depth of field here, too, and again find my way right to the eye, which is nice.

Congratulations on a nice photo, Judi!

David

Technically a good shot, but the composition is confusing. It seems that the hourse's head is growing out of its... back.

It may have been a bit better if you could have zoomed out and got the ears fully in the shot
