Wow 5th place! I was above 7 for most of the voting but in the last few hours droped a long way.

I was trying to do a few things with this image, I know that voters don't access to my mind but it was worth trying anyway.

Firstly - on a visual level desolation can be beautiful. It would have been easy to submit a b/w of this and acheive a more desolate look (that version is in my portfolio) but the beautiful blue water makes this picture for me.

Secondly - on a literal level, this is a very dangerous strech of ocean, over 40 vessels were wrecked along here in the 1800's. So this a representation of the teeth of the ocean, sitting ready to bite any ship foolish enough to cross their path

This was actually taken about 1 hour after sunset, I could hardly see what I was shooting but with the long exposure all these colours appeared. I still had to push the raw file one stop to get the exposure right.

Thanks for voting!

This pic is indeed spectacular, the colors and motion of the waves make it a winner! Great work!

A truly spectacular effect using the 30-second exposure. But at ISO 200 and f-stop of 5, how did you keep this from being horribly overexposed? What time of day was it?

Congrats, and you made the right choice to choose the color version. It's very beautiful, as well as desolate.

Heh. I didn't vote high on this one because it was so beautiful that it didn't convey "desolation" to me. Shows what I know. :)

Congrats!

I was considering entering a b/w version of this photo - more desolation but I didn't think it was as nice a photo

The noise that a few comments have pointed out is actually just more seaspray - hard to avoid with a 30 second exposure of rough surf!

One of my favorite landscape photos from the challenge. Beautiful color, the aqua of the sea pairing with the purple/pink sunset. Very nicely exposed and composed.

This is a beautiful shot. Initiallly I knocked it a bit because it doesn't have a 'sad' feeling. It's almost too pretty, and the water looks too inviting. But looking at is closer, I see that the rocks are fairly barren. This might look more desolate with stormy skies and raging water. It really is a stunning shot, though. Bumping up the score for that.

Another one of my favorites from this challenge. Great detail on the rocks, lovely blues in the water, and you topped it off with a nice pink glow in the sky. good luck

Absolutely masterful sea green foreground; focus, exposure, color and mist are all A+. perhaps the only criticism would be an A- for composition, and the horizon sky is a bit grainy. but hell; this is one of the best.

Amazingly beautiful shot! I love the colors and texture. IMO, it sends a somewhat stronger sense of peace and tranquility than desolation, although in stormy weather, I imagine it would be otherwise. 10

WOW!!! It's hard to feel desolate when feasting on that stunning beauty. I love this! Professional photography in every way. I love the effect of the long shutter speed on those waves contrasting that aqua water. It's just too beautiful not to give a high score. 9 (just 1 point for it being more gorgeous than desolate. . .sorry)

Desolate? but rich in colour, contrast and tone. It defies the definition but is desolate. Not the sort of desolate one gets in Brooklyn where canals are so polluted they catch on fire. Brooklyn has both desolation of colour, of spirit, and even evokes that feeling. However, I think the accuracy of the feeling your photo depicts is applicable.
