Thanks to everyone for all the wonderful comments, I'm very proud of this photo and consider myself lucky that I was in the right place at the right time to get the opportunity to photograph these wonderful animals. That being said, I have learned a very important lesson, DON'T CUT OFF THE FEET... <grin>.
I will try and post someting to the forums with links to all the pictures I took that day.

These horses are absolutely beautiful, and your photograph of them really brings out their softness. I reeally wish both horses had their feet in the shot, and I could definitely do without the barrel distortion. Did you take any other shots in this session? Post them in the forums if you would.

Nice shot. how close were you?
07/21/2002 10:05:00 PM
Excellent photo. Very warm.

Nice pic. The Outer Banks are a rich source for pictures. It's rare to get the ponies in such a photogenic mood. Good job!

these guys are soooo gorgeous. excellent DOF and perfect framing, posing.
07/21/2002 02:16:00 PM
It's a cool photo but I would have liked it better if you didn't cut off the ponys' feet.

GREAT Photography. This photo really stands out. Not just another picture to me. This is full of emotion. National Geographic quality. Excellent work! Do you do this for a living? Tremendous work.

This is another of my top picks this week. What excellent posing from your subjects! My only nitpick is the cut-off feet of the colt. Regardless, this is undeniably a great shot.

Wonderful. It's a bit dark, but sweet shot. 8 Swash

I like the colors of this picture as well as the composition. I'd like to see the horse’s feet inside the frame though.
07/19/2002 01:29:00 PM
What a wonderful natural windswept look!
07/19/2002 06:35:00 AM
Their feet should be included.
07/18/2002 11:46:00 PM
Touching and sweet. Protective. I'd like to see more detail in the older horse's face. Challenging to say the least with the light environment you'd run the danger of over-exposure. But still....a little room for improvement. Good anyway....very good. Hmmmmmm also would like to see the hooves not cut off.
07/18/2002 06:24:00 PM
A good pose which would have ben better if the subjects were not so centered and static. The sky is bland and would have benefitted from a CP.
07/18/2002 06:06:00 PM
framing this just 3 inches lower would have made this perfect - the feet of the 2nd horse wouldn't have been cut off. this is awesome nevertheless - i like the sky, the wind, and their poses. :-)
07/17/2002 11:51:00 PM
you couldn't have a better subject than horses..this is great. Off-centering it would help but this is still great--9

This is an awesome picture, I LOVE it!
07/17/2002 06:24:00 PM
Great Picture!

pretty in the wild
07/17/2002 01:51:00 PM
Beautiful! I simply love this
07/17/2002 01:36:00 PM
excellent composistion.
07/17/2002 09:12:00 AM
This is a beautiful photo... the only think that is keeping me from giving it a 10 is the clip of the feet at the bottom of the frame... great shot! = 9 - jmsetzler

The windblown look is effective. Good composition.
07/16/2002 09:56:00 PM
Great photo. I love the wind in her mane. I wish the colt's hooves had made it in the picture. Were you using an attachment telephoto? I can see shadows from a tube in the corners. 8 Lisa

OK, I did a horse pic too, but this is so much better. Looks like a painting. If i had anything to add it would be only that I wish you could have gotton all at the bottom of the shot.
07/16/2002 04:44:00 PM
Great composition. Good shot.
07/16/2002 12:24:00 PM
A little bit of fillflash would have helped. The horses faces are a little too dark, otherwise great picture!!!
07/16/2002 11:32:00 AM
Nice shot.... small nit pick the feet have been cut off the pony...I still like this alot, nice job
07/16/2002 11:08:00 AM
This reminds me of when I lived in Chincoteague and out near Assateague Island, VA.This photo combines my love for horses and the beaches. I did not realize there were wild ponies off the NC coast. I'll have to get out there. Beautiful shot. 9- KDJohnson

I love this shot! It's just so emotional. Not only are the subjects wonderful, but the setting is beautiful, as well as beautifully done.
07/15/2002 11:45:00 PM
i'm from kentucky and i love horses .. good pic
07/15/2002 09:16:00 PM
Where is this??!! I want to go there! GREAT picture! ('cept for their feet - were they shy about their pedicures?) Last week I cut off the tip of a fish's nose in an aquarium just because it was the only chance I had at the shot. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt on this one. ;) 10 karen_v

Excellent Photo!
07/15/2002 07:23:00 PM
very nice shot, very clear
07/15/2002 05:04:00 PM
this image is definitely the best "horse" image of the bunch, but you should have included the pony's feet in the shot.
07/15/2002 04:42:00 PM
Nice shot... the blowing hair really adds a lot of atmosphere. I think a vertical shot might have worked here, then we could have also seen the feet of the smaller pony.
07/15/2002 03:20:00 PM
Beautiful photo showing the love and protection of a mother. My only issue is the bottom crop that cut off the legs.
07/15/2002 02:55:00 PM
Great shot! I was down on the Outer Banks about a month and a half ago and I took a ride through Corolla and the beach area and saw all of the horses. So beautiful. To get them posed like this is even better! One of my favorites this week, but it would be even better if the feet weren't cut off at the bottom. I love the photo, though!
07/15/2002 02:10:00 PM
really nice!!
07/15/2002 01:03:00 PM
nice... would've love to see the feet though...
07/15/2002 11:07:00 AM
Great capture.
07/15/2002 05:38:00 AM
Feels slightly out of focus but this is a good photo.
07/15/2002 04:55:00 AM
Real good capture, composition. Very nice, maybe could of been a bit lighter but wonderful shot. Kee
07/15/2002 02:05:00 AM
some vinyetting, make sure you dont pull back the zoom to much when using a telephoto lens. otherwise nice depth of field
The Vinyetting in the corners hurts you though
07/15/2002 01:17:00 AM
Nice image. It might have a little more impact if the horses, especially the one facing me were lighter. A half stop would make a real difference and the background, although lighter, would still show well.

animals win every time...
