Challenge: Single Light Source II (Advanced Editing IV*)
Camera: Minolta DiMAGE 7Hi
Location: School drama stage
Date: May 30, 2006
Aperture: 2.8
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/20
Galleries: Emotive, Performance
Date Uploaded: May 30, 2006

I helped my friend Broghan set up the lights on the school stage for her drama monologue and snapped this during a scene for the challenge.

It was very dark and I can't really get away with any ISO higher than 100 on my camera so I had to use a 2.8 aperture and a 1/20th shutter speed.

I wasn't shooing in RAW and I didn't have time to change my white balance in between changing the lights and snapping pictures so I had to just finish it in black and white, which worked better anyway.

After I got to present my monologue. I played a man obsessed with duck tape. :-D

It's nice in monotone - gives it a dark appearance. I like the floor with those scratch marks (or dust?).

yes...or that cellphone commerical :-)

::: Greetings from Critique Club :::

Hi, as requested, here is an indepth critique of your submission.

First Impression - the most important one:
Not bad for a snap shot from a man obsessed with duct tape LMAO!

Composition:
I like the use of negative space here. It really helps make the photo meet the challenge description. It works well for you here.

Subject:
Subject is clear and well defined. No distracting background to worry about.

Technical (Color, focus, and light):
Color: I like the B&W treatment. You are right, it works well here.
Focus: pretty darn sharp for handheld at 1/20 second and wide open aperture. Good work on your part handholding the camera for a snapshot.
Light: Overall, I like it and I know you didn't have much control over it. I have issues with the shadows on her face and that overall her face is dark. Usually I'd suggest a reflector, but that's probably a bit much to ask for here.

To grow its vote?:
Hell, you know more about that than I do right? ;-)

Summary:
Once again good work from you. Keep it up man!

Hope to see more from you soon,
Leroy

Great setup and overall look to the picture. But it comes off a bit dull. I think you may have found something more interesting to take a picture of. A person on a couch talking on a phone is not very emotive.

Interesting use of a spot. I like the use of darkness to surround but it makes the girl awfully small. Nice sharp focus. I think that BW adds.
