Challenge: The Past (Classic Editing*)
Camera: Canon PowerShot G2
Location: Bathroom
Date: Aug 17, 2003
Aperture: 8.0
ISO: 50
Shutter: 0.001
Galleries: Abstract, Sky
Date Uploaded: Aug 17, 2003

I decided on this rather uninspiring shot after thinking about what is the furthest in the past, darkness. Either through the big bang or before God created light. Either way it would have been dark.

It makes for a rather plain and boring photo which undoubtedly will do poorly. No matter though since I think it is creative in the abstract and wonder how many others will touch on the same thing and how they will fair.

I am also submitting it in part because of all the bickering for this challenge. On one hand I think the challenge is good and that bickering over a single challenge is silly, if it is a trend bicker over that, not over a single challenge.

On the other hand I believe this challenge to be unpractical from a photography view point. In the age of chemical film the darkroom was a key tool to the photographer, now in the age of digital film the same is true of image editing software.

Some would even argue that the two are practically useless without each other. I wouldn't but I won't deny that dark room or digital image editing software is a very important part of digital photography.

Disallowing editing in the digital age is almost like removing the windshield from an automobile, sure it makes it more challenging to have the wind and bugs in your face but it isn't very practical and is instead a silly thing to do.

Ok, this isn't the place for rants so I'll stop myself. Hope the photo and the rant made you think for a second, or more! :)

Cheers,
-tog

Sorry but I gave you a 2 in the challenge . I would like too change that to a 10 after reading your comments.

I think that the next time a no editing challenge comes along I will do the same. You had lots of comments on no creativity on a challenge that restricted our creativity. Go figure.

Good point made too bad some of us didn't get it til after.

.....God created the heavens and the earth. Where are they? 1 point for the title.

Ah before the big bang huh? The recent thread in the forums about this kind of photo didn't come at the right time for you I guess.

In the Beginning...or Blackbear from negative space 2 challenge....or...nevermind. Good interpretation? yes. Enough to compensate for other criterea such as composition, lighting, dof, etc.? Sorry.

Been done before. Unfortunately, not really my thing. It's a bit dark. lol. I do like how you filled the frame with the subject, the closeness is really nice, but I think it lacks much detail. Maybe a wider tonal range would help this shot a bit. Overall doesn't really draw me in and hold my attention. My eyes are finding it hard to rest on one single focal point. *rolls eyes* LOL What can I say? Definately different.

I get the idea but I dont think it works as a photograph.

Two challenges in a row we've had blank black "shots." It was funnier the first time...
08/22/2003 06:13:51 PM
Well, it made me laugh, but sorry, it just doesn't strike me as a photograph.
08/22/2003 03:48:38 PM
All I see is a black square.

Please refer to the previous challenge (Neg. Space) for a comment on an identical photo appearing here under a different title.

I'm sorry but I don't see the past in a blank photo...nothing personal...just a different opinoin...

A little less contrast needed :)

Wasn't this picture entered in the Negative Space challenge?
Originality: 0
Therefore, Score: 1

COME ON! Why waste the voters time and energy looking at this crap... I mean, give us a break, if you have nothing to enter, accept it! Don't take it out on us.
08/22/2003 12:53:18 AM
It's a pure black picture. I "get it" but...
