ANZAC Day (April 25) at Dawn. This is Australia and New Zealand's Remeberance Day. It is traditionally a dawn parade in every town and centre which now attracts hundreds and thousands of children with their parents and grandparents as grandfathers tell their grandchildren things they never discussed with their own children.

--------------------------------------------------------
The ANZAC (Australia & New Zealand Army Corps) Dedication:
At this hour, on this day in 1915, on the penninsular of Gallipoli, ANZAC received its baptism of fire and became one of the immortal names in history. We who are gathered here think of the comrades who went out with us to battle but did not return. We feel them still near us in spirit. We wish to be worthy of their great sacrifice. Let us, therefore, once again dedicate ourselves to the service of the ideals for which they died. As the dawn is even now about to pierce the night, so let their memory inspire us to work for the coming of the new light into the dark places of the world.

They shall grow not old, as we who are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
-------------------------------------------------------

Taken in low light difficult conditions. Small crop and lighting stand cloned out. I have debated cropping the left side of the tree out but the haloed hair of the crowd in the foreground adds to the feeling of the crowd of 5,000 and adds perspective. That is the right decision for photojournalism but not for a presentation/disply photo which I would crop tighter.

Greetings from the Critique Club -

Let me start with the fact that photojournalism is not my forte, so my comments will not be from an expert PJ point of view.

I think that cropping out the left side of the tree would have helped. It is obvious that your focus is on the military man, but the tree is so large that it becomes a quick draw to the eyes secondly. I am sure a different angle to initially capture the pic would have taken care of it, but this is what we are dealing with. A slightly lower crop in the top would have helped as well IMO as the top part of your pic doesnt really have much to offer. I can see how leaving the crowd in positively affects the pic, just a shame that it had to come with the tree.

I think the lighting and detail on your main subject is great. The shadow on his face from his hat, yet still being able to see his eyes, really helps set a mood. I know that many think that you shouldnt do much editing to a PJ shot, but a slight desat on the background (tree and people behind) may have made him stand out even better. This may have also taken away some of the focus on the large tree in the back.

Overall - I think you have a pretty good capture here. You have a good shot of the military man under tough photography conditions. I hope this comment helps and I look forward to seeing more of you rowrk inthe future.

Main subject is a bit small for the frame for me. But a great capture of a solomn moment of remeberance that would work well to accompany an article.

there's probably a story here, but not the way you've shot it. from this distance, it's more of a snapshot than a publishable shot.

Effective use of available light. I would fix the tilt of the stage.

too much distracting from the actual focus of the picture. A different view would be better.
