Challenge: Color Studio Portrait II (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Nikon D200
Lens: Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8
Location: Iloilo, Philippines
Date: Apr 13, 2006
Aperture: f4.5
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/125
Galleries: Emotive, Portraiture
Date Uploaded: Apr 16, 2006

I went back to Rosalinda and took over 50 shots.

My nieces had so many conditions for a photoshoot...I have been away too long from my homeprovince that I had a hard time looking for a model. When I went back to her, she readily agreed to pose. As a matter of fact, when she saw me approaching, she ran to he mirror and fixed her hair.

After the Challenge:

Thanks for the votes everyone. I am submitting this just because of the WPL and for the Team Nikon. I have so many good pictures of Rosalinda and I don't wanna be viewed as an exploiter but I guess that's what I did in the last 3 challenges. So, I deserve the 1s, 2s and 3s. Mea Culpa.

This is incredible
you are incredible
One day i can only hope to be nearly as inspiring and creative as you are when it comes to portraits
08/06/2006 05:58:24 PM
that amount of 1s, 2s, and 3s is rediculous. there's no way this could score that low unless someone is just hating the face of how good you are. great model, and great job manny.

i always look forward to your work. everyone shot you've done of this beautiful woman has shown her beauty, dispite her obvious flaws, and that says a lot for you.

congratulations on work well done.

Again, great shot. You have captured thid woman in a way that many never could have. Now looking at your portfolio I see that you have a way with portraits. Keep up the good work.

This is amazing! I love the focus and details of her skin. Her skin is also beautiful against the fabrics. Amazing!

*Critique Club*

Good grief. I am not sure what you want me to add, that the other 80 commenters have not already said. I guess the biggest most helpful advice that I can really give is that if you feel that you have received the appropriate feedback during voting, you CAN uncheck the box requesting a critique club critique.
About the photo:
I think it looks just like all your other portraits. Scarf on the head, person off to the left of the photo, blank background. Focus is great, lighting is great, the photo contains lots of character.
There is no reason this should not be technically perfect, you've done it a zillion times.
The colors are very nice. I like the red and green. she is an old lady, and looks frail, however, the lighting on her arm makes her appear thinner than I think she really is judging by her other photo showing her arm. See the shadows on the arm? It blends in with the background making some parts of her arm seem almost invisible. That would be my only real 'complaint' of the photo.
You've proven you can do the portraits...why not try something else? This IS a learning site after all. I had to go all the way back to LAST YEAR to find a photo that did not contain people. Next challenge...Do something special for me. No people. It's time. Show us what else you got!
Very lovely portrait of an interesting character. Nothing more to add.

Manny congrats nanaman pare ko! This is just superb although I have to agree with most that the first one is still the best one.

I agree with Riggs. Although I will say I was a bit guilty of the same thing (i.e. penalizing this for the over use of the model). I scored it a 6 when it should have been much higher. Sorry about that. I probably was in a pissy mood at the time. :( Still rather amazing you scored a 6.8 with all those low votes.

I have no idea why they just killed you with the low ball scores. It makes me ill and sorta makes me question some things.

Thats just stupid that this shot would get 10 ones...its insane, those votes should have been thrown out....because the are obvious trolls.

I am not taking away from any one that won ribbons, or scored higher....because they had wonderful shots. It was a great contest.

But the low balling has to end, I hope one day.

Pity that people can't vote on the merit of the image.

I was feeling a bit 'tired' seeing this great face, but this still had to be an 8 (your blue ribbon shot of her was a 10 for me).

I like this picture as well but I liked the other one better ;-)...

I did a quick questimate that the folks that voted this so low were doing it as a protest (bad voters... each photo is an individual entry on its own merits) and probably cost this picture at least .25 points to the average which would have pushed this to the ribbon catagory. Probably not first but in the ribbon category.

I like the level of detail Librodo is able to get out of his photos. As someone else posted, he doesn't seem to take a bad picture... I think it is time for him to post one of his bad pictures ;-).

Great photo!

I'm going to throw something out there:

I can understand the low votes. Especially the 1s. (Doesn't mean I necessarily *agree* with them fully).

There are a very many people on this site that hate feeling manipulated. That hate feeling like they're being played for the fool. There are also people on this site that view such things as the same model (especially one so recognizable), in consecutive or near consecutive challenges, violates the spirit of DPC. This leads to emotions that lead to scores of 1, 2, or 3.

Whether you agree with it or not, these people's thoughts and reactions are here to stay and are a part of the site, and should be respected along with everything else.

I've been a victim of putting the same model in too many challenges too closely together myself. People simply don't like it. That's the chance you take when you submit something of this nature, and I bet donuts to dollars that Manny knew this when he submitted.

Instead of being angry at the people that are angry at Manny, just enjoy the photo if you like it.

Personally, and as much as I think Manny is a great guy, this *does* smack a little too much of voter manipulation... but hey.. it's competition. It's DPC.. and you do what you gotta do. Some of us might not like it, but life goes on.

It was just a surprise seeing this picture without a ribbon, but more surprising is to see all that 1!
Perhaps when people decide to vote 1 such pictures they should have the courage to explain why...

I didn't enter this challenge or vote in it. This is the first time I've looked through the entries.

This is beautiful. The colors of her veil or perfect with her brown skin. Very striking portrait.

OK...Manny, you can't shoot a bad picture if you tried! Excellent result, but it seems some dpc'ers are wanting Rosalinda to take a break from her new modelling contract with Librodo Photographics Inc ...;-)

10 x 1's...that has to be a record for you

BTW...I gave this an 8

10 .. 1s????? i feel like swearing at those a$$holes.. who the HELL can give this AMAZING photograph a FRICKIN 1? then find another 9 A$$HOLES to follow them.. its SLANDEROUS!!!

With that OFF my chest now I can say, SHE and YOU are simply FANTASTIC, what a SUPER model, brilliant image that, to me, conveys a beauty in ageing presented by a man that is one of the greatest photographers I know. Even WITH the ABUSE of 1s 2s and 3s this image STILL finished top 10 and SHOULD of ribboned.

I could NEVER be tierd of seeing Rosalinda she is beautifull.

Now this I really like; the punch of that clouded eye, especially in this context - the fact that we know her face now, the fact that it's in this collection of smoothly beautiful people, that your near-trademark headscarf arrangement hints at a clouding of her other eye in a more metaphysical sense adds a power that just isn't there in other photographs in this challenge. Clever, and in a true way rather than simply a whimsy. Excellently done - and I like that so much of that is to do with the context, rather than a simple stand-alone photograph.

I almost feel compelled to lower my vote since I've seen her so much lately, and in photos better than this. The portrait is however very nice. I really like her arm and the jewellery on it. The colours are nice and vibrant. Even in her age she seems more lively than most young people. Your portraits never cease to impress me.

She is an excellent subject for photography, but these colors don't seem to integrate well. I'm not sure why, but there seems to be some disconnection between the age and texture of this woman and the brightly colored veils.

sweet mystical eyes.
but to be honest, it's starting to get a little tiring, with all the "worn out and wrinkled" faces in DPC submissions as of late. Sorry I was just being honest, not trying to offend. In all technically, this photos scores pretty well. Cheers.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm, wonder who´s shot this is :)

Well Manny, sorry but comparing this to your textures shot this isn´t spectacular at all but comparing this to the rest of the shots in the challenge it´s pretty friggin awesome, like the lighting as always and while the textures shot was composed better, this is very well composed too. Gave this an 8 and I figure you are kicking my butt, just glad we are not competing against you guys in week 3 but prepare to go down in week 4 :)

04/17/2006 11:32:00 AM
Here is that great model again, however I think the colors of the scarves overwhelm her a bit in this one. Perhaps a beige or darker color would have allowed more of a subtleness. Still, a really good portrait. You rule.

Manny-The burning or shadowing on the arm gives this a Tales Of The Crypt/skeletal type of feel. Outside of that the coloring a clarity are wonderful.

Ahhh, Erlinda again. If this is unother than Librodo, then I would be shocked.

She took first in Textures. I voted it pretty high there. She was in Candid, and I gave it a so-so score because it was the same woman. Now, here she is again in Color Portrait. Will she also be in "Something Old"????

Nice photo, great subject, but now it is too over used and a bit tiring. I hold anonymity in high regard when I vote, and to me this is just milking it too much. My score reflects that in this challenge. I "try" to vote the photo on its merits, but when I see a photo over milked and shoehorned in nearly every challenge, I simply can't get past that faux pax by the photographer. Good luck with it though.
