This is a great image and which I liked during the challenge voting period. I like it even more now. It has a lot of usage potential in colour and duotone. Very nice.

The setup and positioning of this works well. The negative space is also fine in my opinion - maybe cropped just a wee bit tighter, but not much. If taken later in the day the lighting may have not been as harsh. (Just peeked down and looked at the sepia version and I like that one a bit better myslef). Overall this shot was ok but not a real eye catcher making me want to stay longer to view.

The positioning of the subject works well imho, with the diagonal of the sea making it more than just empty sand. Although I would personally give a tiny bit more negative space to the left, so its more bang on the third.

The noise doesn't detract overall, but it seems as though it makes the girl less crisp and clear - 400ISO seems a tad unnecessary if you're working with this light level.

Its nice how the brightly coloured subject pops out, but I think it could be made a lot stronger with just a little extra to echo this colour - maybe a bucket in the sand in front of the castle, or something, perhaps.

At first I thought this would have scored higher - maybe around 5.8 at least, but the link to the challenge isn't particularly dynamic whic hdoes bring it down aa little in my books. Its not that it dnmc or anything, but the link isn't 'wow'.

edit: just been looking through the other comments - I like ericwoo's approach with the sepia. Although the burst of colour is lost, it brings out more texture in the sand. Not sure which version I prefer

ok here is my take on your pic. it seems that there is too much sand? i like the way the light is falling (for a beach) and the wave coming in the position of your "subject". i think maybe that it is just too much brown sand. maybe ifn there were her tracks on the far side of the caslte leading into the water? hope this helps

this is a very nice image, composition is very good and there are no distractions in the image that steal away from the subject, there are still a few things that could be improved...

as the title speaks of a castle, then there should be a castle, not a pile of sand.. I think some people have voted you down for that.

the waterline seems burned out, there are no details visible there

and the girls left arm seems burned out to.

with those details fixrd this could have scored in the top 50 :)

Wow. First impression with this image is very powerful, for me. I think you've designed this composition perfectly.

The variegated background of the ripply sand is a powerful supporting element for the subject. It almost has a minimalist feel to it, were it not for the gorgeous incoming wave, which is still further textured. The angle of the water, together with its white line of foam, really push against the subject in a way that adds much tension for me, which really satisfies. The angle of the castle the little girl is working on reflects all of this so nicely. It is also "pushing" the texture of the sand into the picture somewhat, really creating a powerful effect, in my opinion.

She seems perfectly positioned in this photograph. Her arms, in turn, seem to be adding still more energy to the composition by pushing away at the bank of sand at her side. The colours of her attire add much interest; some clever hue/desat may have added a bit of drama. If I were to nit-pick, I'd mention the visible portion of her shoe, but never mind. ;)

Lighting is really great. Once again, I have the sense of pushing, or tension, as the afternoon shadows disappear out-of-frame in the opposite direction of all the aforementioned "action".

Overall, a wonderful photo that I've really enjoyed looking at. Thanks!

Ah, I remember this one from voting - what strikes me first is the strong composition - well done, in my opinion. I like the diagonal of the water, and that you put the subject and shadows in the middle/lower left to keep the beach to the right pristine. Lovely tones in the sand, and the colors of her hat really add a nice touch of contrast.

Nice shot, good idea and well executed. Could go without the border.

As i write this, I have no idea what you scored or what others thought - these are my "raw" thoughts. This is a shot that I really like. The expanse of sand really makes me think of the ocean. It looks like Atlantic sand. I really like the composition, and I don't know what you could have done to make that suit me any more. The color splash caused by the girl's hat and clothing is especially attractive, and pulls my eye quickly to itself. All that said, it still looks a little bit like a vacation snapshot, and I'm not sure why. I think it needs a touch of contrast, but I think the biggest "flaw" here is that it seems to have been shot in bright midday sun. A similar shot at sunup (or sundown, depending on the beach location) might have had some very interesting light colors. I think that's what it needs most.

I scored this a 6 in the challenge. Though it met the challenge well, it just seemed not to have any type of wow factor. Maybe too much sand (browns). IMHO, I think a closer crop or a vertical take with more of the ocean showing and less of the sand would have improved this.

This is very nicely composed, the exposure is nailed and the focus is crisp. However, I think that the color really takes away from this capture. Forgive me, but I wanted to take a look at it with SEPIA TONING, and I think that the treatment serves it well. The color work in your portfolio is spectacular! I just think this one works a little better tined.

I like the composition and lines. Color on the little girl really brings your eye to her.

Maybe a bit of a stretch, but I do like the off center. The pink of her hat really draws your eye in. What about an adjustment of curves or levels to really enhance the sand color?

good use of the Rule of Thirds, the touch of color adds a lot to this
