Challenge: Painting With Light II (Basic Editing III)
Collection: Challenges
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Lens: Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM
Location: Harwich Port, MA, USA
Date: Feb 28, 2006
Aperture: f/22
ISO: 100
Shutter: 50 seconds
Date Uploaded: Feb 28, 2006

RAW Conversion — nearly straight from camera: selective color layer used to mute the bright reflection and color it, using the white channel, -11/+100/+99/-35; hue/sat used for a slight bump in the yellow range to pop the green stem; resize, USM.

Illuminated with small, hand-held hi-intensity "blue" light. Pepper standing on upended black portfolio in front of an upended translucent white cutting board. A version was done with backlighting through the board, but this one worked better.

The reflections drove me crazy. No way around them. The colors are just as the camera saw them, including the area that looks blocked up on the left. The light was moved around from left through bottom to right. This is one of the straightest shots I have ever submitted. It has flaws, but it has power and impact too so the hell with it. I never tried anything like this before and I am tired :-)

Agreed, especially on the power and impact. The simplicity, the subtle lighting and the colours made this a potential winner for me. However, the imperfect pepper made the perfectionist in me drop the mark to a 7 ;)

This would have been even better if it werent for the bad pepper. I catch myself focusing on the marks in the pepper.

Nicely done, good shading and shaping with your light source.
