The Brighton Donut. A bronze statue situated between the two piers. The title is a play on words.. It's actually round cubed, but the squared fits better with the crop.

Thanks for all the comments and votes!

The border is a "flaw" in my teleconverter. This was actually shot with my polarizer (explaining the rich warm colours) and two UV filters on between my telelconverter and lens adapter. This was the only way I was able to get all of the vignetting circle into the frame.

Would you belive that I completely didn't think about the "literal representations of someone elses art" until about two days into the voting? It never even occured to me during the shooting, submission process.

Rob: I think us Brighton based photographers are going to have to get together and come up with a shooting schedule. The piers seem to make their way into many challenges, and I know for a fact that the Beachyhead lighthouse was almost in the "From Above" challenge twice.

Once again, thanks!

Matt - Fortunately for us I didn't get down to the sea-front during the week else I was going to enter the same, could've stuffed it for both of us. Well done.

Matt - your critique club moment is at hand. damn I'm glad to see this one come up, after our convversation about that other shot of yours.

My first reaction is surprise that it only placed 7th, but it does step on the toes of the 'literal representation of others works of art' rule quite heavily.

What I love about this, and what for me perhaps puts it above all the other shots I've seen in the challenge, is the light: not only is it the perfect light to shape this image, and to give a real sense of three dimensions to the do-nut, but you've also caught the colour ttemperatre of it perfectly: the warmness of it on the wall to the left of frame is marvellous.

The circular border effect (however it's achieved) works perfectly too. My first impression of this, on seeing the thumbnail, was that it was an eye - and that feeling still hasn't quite gone away after looking at it for quite a while.

I'm not goig to begin to criticise this technically - there's quite obviously nothing wrong with it: it's the first shot i've added to my favourites in quite a little while. Must be getting picky in my old age.

Congratulations on a fine photo.

Very interesting. It seems a bit dull in general....... Mabe a time closer to midday would have povided a better light?

Great use of a "flaw" in your teleconverter (I'm making a giant leap of faith there!). Wish I had thought of it. My only concern with it is the blur at the edges - too bad it couldn't be sharper. I like the colors and lighting (that shadow in the middle is excelent). Focus is good. Overall a nice shot and a great idea.

Biggest Cheerio I've ever seen! This is a fun sculpture, and the lighting and shadows are awesome. I don't care much for the vignetting of the image, but that's just me. It does go well with the challenge, though.

Very nice. Great sharpness, tones, colour. I love the lighting. I also like how the horizon is carefully considered. I don't know why but I thought of the game 'Myst' as soon as I saw it. Looks like it belongs there. I hope this does well, there's nothing I would change.

Thats a big...whatever. I'm not sure I would have used the frame thing mainly because of how the sun is shining on the left side of the photo, I would have tried to get more of that into the picture.

That's an interesting one of those things! Reminds me of a giant donut that was featured in an episode of The Simpsons one time.

I'd like this better without the rounded lens. I really like the big round rock thing though!

I know how you did this! You used a tele-converter and zoomed the lens right back right? Cool effect. I like the off center shadow in the middle - 9.

I like it, the out of focus round border makes it much better than a square crop would have been.

love this! and the lens framing. had me guessing what it was as it was loading. well positioned and good balance. I like how the water cuts the inner circle perfectly.
