The idea was to create an image that could have been on an album cover for a musician and I really like how this came out. This was one of the last shots we did before heading home and we were both absolutely freezing since it was pretty windy and several degrees under celsius. The models name is Kristin, some of you might recognise her from my Triptych entry as the girl in the middle. Was going to use some kind of fill in lighting, had my bowens lights with me but I didn´t trust the stands in the wind so this is just shot in ambient lighting close to sunset.

Edited this solely in CS2. Shot in raw like all my other shots and I used the wignetting correction tool in the CS2 raw converter to increase the wignetting to extremes to get the dark corners in the bottom. Adjusted wb, contrast boost, shifted the colours slightly too the blue side, used selective colour to bring back a little colour to her face and finally sharpened after resizing.

Edited after the challenge:

Well well well, a DQ, my first and hopefully last... Never in a million years did I think this would be disqualified, it didn´t even cross my mind but apparently I don´t interpret the rules as most people do. Anyway, strongly disagree with this DQ but I respect it so I am moving on. As far as I am concerned, this shot got a yellow ribbon but who is counting, right? :) Just to clarify, it was disqualified because I added the dark corners in the .raw processing phase of the shot with Photoshop CS2 under the lens correction tab.

If anybody is interested, there is a huge thread that has some discussion on this photo and the editing amongst other things.

As always, many thanx for all the comments and especially the many favorites, as far as I am concerned this is one of my best images that I have submitted so far on DPC and I am so glad so many of you like it :) Cheers!

Edited again in June 2006:

Well finally got a chance to redeem my only (to this date anyway) DQ in the "Take Two" challenge, here is the thumbnail to that image.

Hi, I have been shown this image because I'm in some doubt as to why I'm about to be disqualified for doing exactly what you did here - I increased the vignette on Lightroom under the 'lens correction' tools. I agree with you wholeheartedly, this shouldn't be seen as any more than basic editing - your shot is fantastic, as is the rest of your work, and you did what I would call a global change, which should be allowed under basic editing rules. Not only that, but its a lens correction - if you can crop, rotate, adjust levels, desaturate any colour you wish and thereby creating a completely different effect, I don't see why you can't increase the vignette.
Congratulations on your amazing photos, they are all worthy of constant ribbons!
cheers,
Trish

Not to worry, this could be an album cover or one for the wall. I personally value more out of peoples comments and the fact they may add my shot to their favourites. That means alot. As much as we love DPC , it is only a spec in the universe !

I am also really disappointed that this got dq'd! As I stated during the challenge, this was my strong pick for blue. And I didn't think anything you did in RAW before you even opened the picture counted against the basic editing rules. Eeeeeeee. . ..now I know. Sorry you had to be the sacrificial lamb that taught us all that rule.

But everyone's right. It doesn't take away from how awesome the photo is. . .only that there's a pink highlight marking it instead of a yellow ribon :(

Bummer. I had hoped for a ribbon.

Was it the selective colour tool that DQ'd this one?

I don't understand why this picture got disqualified. As far as I can tell there was no spot editing although Larus did use the vignetting tool in the Adobe Camera RAW converter. I feel it extremely difficult to understand how that can be called 'spot editing' and for that matter I've used it in a basic challenge myself - //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=271074

I hope this judgement will be reconsidered, at least if the vignetting was the sole reason for the disqualification.

This is an excelent photo; the contrast, the sense of motion, the expression on her face. The only thing that would make it better, for me, is if there was a bit more detail on her cloths. I can sees the belt buckle but everything else is lost in the darkness.

Awesome! Nice concept. I'm interested to know how use obtained the gradiant effect, i.e. bright center, yet darker around the edges. Again, great photo. congrats.

Wow! I haven't gone through all the images, but I have a feeling that I won't find a better one. Great contrast, good composition. One thing I would have tried is a different crop. Centered composition is rarely the best choice, especially since the bottom of your photo is dark. I would have cropped out most of the road in front of her feet.

Bump up to 10 on second pass. I found some better ones now that I'm done with them all, but this is still a yellow or a red ribbon potential IMO.

Great shot! The leadin lines work really well. Looks like a fashon mag image. The womans clothes are a bit dark on my monitor and lack some detail. Dont mind her being centered either it adds to the shot imo. 9.
