Another well-lit portrait. An experienced photograper friend of mine told me he thought photographing dark-skinned people was one of the hardest things to do well.

I'm blown away. I can scarcely find the words. The unbelievable tonal range, the incredible detail in the highlights and shadows, the texture that almost makes this shot feel 3D. My hat is off. My only 10 of the challenge so far.

This is really an excellent portrait. How I wish it wasn't the style to cut off the top of the subject's head in portraits.

Focus is a bit soft, but I like the lighting. Nice and bold, without being too harsh or overbearing. Not the greatest expression IMO, and the light may have contributed to more squinting than intended.

"Best Portrait in Challenge" prize from me. Wonderful subject, and beautifully executed photograph. I'm no expert on this subject, but I believe that the tonal control here is masterful. As I look at it, I can see all the nearly-suppressed detail in the hair and background, but if I tilt my monitor a little then all that detail is swallowed up, and the character of the portrait changes astonishingly. I actually prefer this second, more minimalist version, but either way it's a terrific work. 8.

Oh how I LOVE photos like this! The chiseled features. The 3-dimensional sharpness. His serious expression adds to the depth of the photo. In my opinion, it doesn't get any better than this for a moving, expertly photographed image! 10
