I fail to see why it actually matters whether or not she comes from Ipanema - I noticed some people making a fuss about that. What I love about this shot is the way that the girl is looking off to the side. She doesn't seem to be posing for a picture; just thinking. Her expression is almost forlorn, and she looks so deep in thought that I spent many minutes just staring at her and wondering, what is it that has captured her train of thought as such?

A really wonderful shot. I especially like the shadowing around her collar-bone. It might seem odd, but I think that her collar-bone is absolutely beautiful.

Great job.

Just reading back on some of the comments... does it really matter if she's actually from Ipanema or not? What matters is that this is a fantastic photo, and congratulations to goodman for your ribbon! The photo itself is not dependent on the title and so little niggly things like this don't really matter!! Ok, got that off my chest...

Greetings from the Critique Club

After a somewhat boring night I decided to get active and start some critiques which I have been very slack with for some time now, and what do I pull first up ?

The ironic twist to this was that last night was quite boring also and I decided to try my hand at some sketching using DPC database as reference material and guess what……after a long search this image is the one I eventually decided to try my hand with, so I feel I know this face quite well.

Enough of the history lets look at it from my perspective. I will try to disregard the challenge description to a certain degree as I feel enough debate has gone on regarding the relevance of the description in the forums and look at this image purely as a candid.

In my view the two most important aspects of this image are the sepia tones and the attractive shape of the subjects face. Sepia is perfect for this image it really does add a lot of quality to the feel and natural expression of the subject which then reflects on the image as a whole giving the viewer an impression that we should like or feel pity for this person for some subconscious reason.

The shape of her face is very endearing to all that view and is what really makes this image special, the lovely clear white eyes, the beautiful high cheekbones and the lovely pointed chin adds so much but it’s the expression that separates this from other candid shots she portrays a certain melancholy demeanor which has us all guessing……. what is she thinking about?

You have really captured a great image here and the composition is perfect with the subject in the left side looking to the void of the right side which keeps the image balanced but if I must nit- pick it would be something that was out of your control in this challenge that being the bright white shirt being worn by the person behind, this is unfortunate and does distract a little. When I look back at what I scored this (9) I realize it must have been that shirt that held me back from giving this a ten.

You should be very proud of this image you have certainly captured the essence of the challenge and now have another great image for your portfolio, congratulations on the well deserved ribbon and sharing your world with us.

Kind regards

Tim

After two years of submitting and voting on challenges, I have found it increasingly difficult to get excited by an image (my own included)as the senses seem to dull with the repetition.
However, every now and then a picture crops up which stirs things back into life.
This one does it for me.
I love everything about it..it`s fresh and vibrant and suits the toning effect very well.
My favourite from the challenge.

Congratulations.

This was one of my favourites, and I gave it a 10. Congratulations!

Out of the three challenge winners this is the only one that meets the requirement of using DOF to isolate the subject. Goes to show how well the voters read the challenge rules...

I like the flow of this; which makes it look less like a portrait and more like a candid; and that fits the challenge and makes it overall quite good.

For the "Tribute" challenge, I was studying famous photographers and their styles. After being on net for few days, going through hundreds of photos, when I came back on DPC, I saw the top three photos for "Singled-Out" challenge. I can't believe how close these photos are to the photos from the 'legends' which I have been studying in last few days. "Eye Contact", "Girl .." and "Dressed .." are all just "wow!" (though I feel better title would have complimented "Dressed...")

8 - Nice capture/candid. Toning works well. Criticism; not much shot-wise, possibly the lady's shirt (the lightness) behind 'the girl' detracts/distracts slightly, whether the toning helped/hindered that, who knows. Depending what you had to work with, possibly a little more height and context top/bottom especially, maybe the left as well, but again minor and 'nit picking'. The biggest 'detractor' in this in my opinion is the title, it does 'work', but knowing the history of this song, just doesn't 'suit' it in my opinion, whether or not this girl is from Ipanema or not, but again, minor and yes, just my opinion. Up to 8 from 7. edit:typo
