Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Backlighting II (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Location: Ocean Beach, San Francisco, CA
Date: Jan 7, 2006
Aperture: 4
Shutter: 1/800
Galleries: Water, Seascapes
Date Uploaded: Jan 10, 2006

Taken with a point-and-shoot (Canon S50, is this cheating?). Cropped to give a 2:3 ratio.

Didn't bring my camera, and naturally, didn't intend to take a shot for dpchallenge submission. Had to borrow a friend's point-and-shoot, but I wouldn't have achieved the right exposure with a dSLR anyways.

Very moody photograph. The surfer makes the picture. Also the lines of water coming up the beach are great. They lead the eye out to sea.

I like this. The description specifically said no silhouettes though, so although it's a beautiful image, it sort of doesn't really follow the rules. The sun seems awfully blown out and almost hurts the eyes. What if you cropped out the sun and just had the beautiful glow on the shore?

Now, I do like the texture of the water on the sand - making striations of light and shadow. I like the placement of the figure.

very nice shot...is it true to the topic? hmmm? not sure it's in the spirit of a backlight shot, but wonderful composition and great colours...God makes nice things!

DNMC
the subject must not become a silhouette because of the backlighting.
