After reviewing this Google offering, reviewing your profile, and seeing this image, it's painfully obvious that it may be best if you reserve your comments, look and learn from Brent and the others here that actually participate, recognize, and appreciate a truly spectacular photograph. That Critique Club thing that seems to like them? They also seem to share the opinion that this is a nice shot.

Oh......and perhaps all those voters that helped give it a blue ribbon.....they seemed to be of a consensus that it's a pretty okay shot, too.

Also if you've never been to Canyonlands National Park, you have no appreciation for how difficult it is to translate this kind of grandeur to a mere photographic image.

Brent, truly nice work......I'm glad I stumbled onto this! A fav for sure!

This is an excellent interpretation of Mesa Arch, Canyonlands National Park & the La Sal mountains. Looking at the big collection of photos taken of this site "Mesa Arch", it appears that each photographer sees it differently. It almost makes me want to run out there myself and take a look. How can one spot get so many different interpretations? It is facinating. What I like about this photograph is that there seems to be a balance of form and size that is artistically finished. And more importantly, it creates a feeling a "being there and looking out" as opposed to just a photo of a heavy arched rock. The heaviness is gone and the landscape intrigues the eye.

So, does that mean landmark pics, no matter how spectacular, are taboo just because someone, somewhere, has at some time taken a picture of/from the same thing? I've seen shots of this before too, but I LOVE this one. No two photos are ever alike.....

Bloody hell Brett !! What a shot. If you have more detail in your prints - I would love to see them. The detail you have in what we see on line is absolutely breathtaking. Well done. I would love to hear the technical details of what you did.

Stunning capture that makes me want to pay a visit to your part of the world. I remain confident that an image of this quality posted of a travel brochure would entice people to visit the Canyonlands National Park... I know it does for me, and I will.

Ray,

Thanks for the compliment!! If you go to Canyonlands to shoot Mesa Arch, get there very early in the morning. When it's still dark (5am), and stay until at least 10am. Sunrise is the only time of day to shoot this arch.

Beautiful image Brent! Well done, and congratulations!

I too struggle getting detail in landscapes when down to 640 pixels. 800 seems much more manageable.

Thank you for the kind words. Believe it or not, I didn't use neat image at all on the shot. I lose the detail when I resize for the web. No matter how much I sharpen or how I sharpen, I never seem to be able to get the detail back. My prints always look so much better.

When will YOU submit something so we can all see what is "original", "impressive" and "technically superior"?

Although I don't care whether or not this shot is original, I agree that the technical quality isn't that great. For me, the photo doesn't look sharp and there are too many artifacts. It is a great composition and exposure, though, and the majority of voters thought it was the best of the challenge. You should be thrilled with that. Just my 2 cents...

Hey Brent, it's a great shot. The fact that you took a popular scene and made an excellent shot is something to be proud of. I feel that's how we learn. We find pictures we like and see if we can do the same or better. This is one of the best I've seen. Good work.

9 - Very good. Like the big size. Good username capture. Criticism; not much, to really nit-pick, maybe a slight variation in the crop at the top, but minor. Perhaps a little more detail on the fore rock (including the 'overhang'), but likely difficult. Hard to discern with this view, but the horizon may need a slight nudge up on the left, but apologies if wrong - the shadows are nice in the fore, but if they and the colors could be emphasized just slightly (if possible), may have made this even better in my opinion. I think I have to take this up to 9 from 8.

Very pretty. I think it is screaming for a curves adjustment - it would really deepen the tonality. The vista and detail of the rocks is nice, but I think that added oomph would really send this panorama over the top. Nicely focused and the perspective is good. 7
