Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Phobia (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Canon EOS-350D Rebel XT
Lens: Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Location: G-D of Luxembourg, Bascharage, my bedroom
Date: Dec 19, 2005
Aperture: F/2,8
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1,8 sec.
Galleries: Portraiture, Black and White
Date Uploaded: Dec 20, 2005

127 nails, lots of time, unlimited stupidity. And a brandnew 50mm lens :D

Inspired by Pedro's 'Disturbed'.
For the lighting I used a variation of technique I recently learned from Keith Maniac. It's a single halogen lamp diffused by very thin paper.

Thanks to my sister Denise for helping me somewhat with the 'makeup'. I used the double-sided sticky pads you can use to put photographs into an album. They were too big and had to be cut, hence some are still visible.

Converted from RAW with Canon DPP.
Post Processing with PSP9:
-HSL colourize (orange)
-Curves
-Resize
-USM
-Add borders

I'm looking forward to the comments :)

Post challenge: W00t! It seems the 50mm are real phobia lenses, all 3 ribboners used one.

None fell off. The pads are really sticky. In fact, removing them hurt a lot and a bit of skin came off. Ouch.

Gloda - great work - worth all the effort. Neat light trick - I'll keep that in mind. I love the "photography comment" as it lets us into how these neat photos were taken and where the inspiration stems from. Thanks for taking the time to explain it.

Congratulations… this is a wonderful shot. I think the positioning and posing are perfect. The interesting composition part to me is the fact that the all the nails provide leading lines strait to the subject as well as being part of the subject. Only thing I might change is a tighter trim on some of the adhesives. Well done… well deserved ribbon.

Really emotive! I love the eyes, the really-really don't touch me looking. Black and white works well. Just a small issue, that the glueing is visible with a few of the screws. Hovewer, this shot touched me. Merry Christmas and good luck! (10)

I'm interested in the lighting used... it is hard light from a single source correct? And also u have my props for the shear amount of time (and discomfort) this must have caused you.

Definitely very creative. One of my personal favourites out of all the 100+ pictures for this challenge. I gave you an 8 though. It's not easy to bring fear out through the eyes. To me the look gives more of a surprised vibe rather than fear. So I took half a point off there. Another half off for seeing the cellar tape sticking out of the pins/nails. The one point was taken off because of not entirely showing the fear. As in if you did the same for the body, sticking more pins/nails on the neck and shoulder, I'd certainly given it a 9 or more. Great job though. The composition itself is spot on. I'm hoping you get a ribbon, when I say that I hope I didn't just jinx you.

Amazing shot, im only nitpicking here but there are a few tacks where you can see the tape

Really nice! Almost like hellraiser. I like the emotion on the face, My only flaw I see is the sticky tape off some of the nails on the forehead, easly fixed had this been advanced editing!

Your effort is admirable, the expression very good, composition great, lighting dramatic, stark b&w treatment very suitable - can you tell I like this a lot?
On top of all that, you even read and followed the challenge description. Well done!!!! 10

Excellent and a really great way to illustrate the phobia. 9 Would have been a 10 if I could not see the sticky pads behind the nails, as they just take the edge off it, but only slightly. Great photo and hopefully a ribbon.
