Challenge: Triptych (Advanced Editing IV*)
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Lens: Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM
Location: Back Room, CA
Date: Nov 9, 2005

So I would say this is my first real "studio-like" attempt (I usually do natural outdoor settings and candids) - and definitely my first triptych (thanks to the DPC forums for giving me some hints on how to do one of these things).

This is my Ovation CS257 guitar. I love this thing - I think it's one of the most beautiful looking and sounding acoustic guitars around. When the challenge was announced, I was envisioning a type of poster/advertisement shot of the guitar, playing off the title "Standing Ovation". I'm pretty happy with the outcome - hopefully it will catch the eye of a few voters.

The set up was pretty simple. My 4 year old son and I ventured to the local fabric store to get some black cloth for the background (cheapest photographic investment yet! $5.98) and taped it to the wall, with some of it draping on the floor. Took the floor lamp from the living room and a desk lamp from the kids room, moved them around the guitar to get the lighting I was looking for - had to really play around to remove the shadows. Took a number of pictures using the 70-200mm and the 100mm macro (which was used in the third picture). I tried to get enough of the guitar to show the rich colors and design, while also playing off the 'standing' concept. Was a fun project - and now I know how to do triptychs!!

Post challenge: Wha-whooo! Thanks everyone for the votes and comments! FYI, no post process cropping was done on these shots, all full frame pictures. I'm bummed about the last picture - I didn't realize the background blacks did not match until seeing them on a different monitor (after the voting started). Argh!

It was said everyone is tired of seeing guitars in challenges. I think you proved them wrong. Congratulations on a great entry and top 10 finish.

Congrats on your well-deserved top ten! Especially the restraint on your border and how well it complements the beautiful lighting on your subject.

7 - Good, nice and 'clean'. Criticism; not much, mainly the red inner thin frame, not sure if perhaps a darker red, or different color may have made this better in my opinion. Maybe just a little more contrast/color. More definition in the detail in 1 & 3 too, but almost impossible I realize at this 'size'. Good 'showcase' via triptych. Up to 7 from 6.

love the colours, composition and subject, the red on black border is a terrific choice, the cropping in the right hand shot is a bit close on the left.

I can see this hanging in a music-lovers home or an upmarket music themed restuarant. Well constructed with just the right colours and exposure.

Nice shot. I think I would like it better if the guitar had been placed at a different angle in the first frame, but that's just me being picky.
