Poorly focused. Unappealing box springs the dog is laying on - might consider covering it with something more attractive next time

Thank you lynn. I know the angle could have been better. I really did very little editing to this photo and didn't even take it for this challenge. Just did a contrast touch I think. I really entered it last minute since it was in the time frame, but thanks for the input. Now I am going to look up the word "juxtaposition". LOL....

I rated it lower because it looked like the dog was lying on a mover's blanket and the lack of shadow detail in the exposure, particularly around the dog's eye. I rated it higher because the background objects contributed to the concept of garbage lying about out of focus because of the well-chosen depth of field, and I liked the juxtaposition of it with the healthy flowers. The tones of the blurred foliage adds a painterly touch. An angle that would have shown the depth of the mattress would have significantly impacted my scoring.

nshapiro, thank you for the comment. I do understand the angle could have been better. This is why I had so many I know look at it before I entered it, and without saying anything but that I was entering it in a garbage theme, they got it and loved the idea. So many got it while voting too, so it is a bit odd to me that these questions would occur on that basis alone. But, I think you da bomb!! And thanks for stopping by to comment after the contest was over. You know I am not one for comments at all on photos if you have read my comments about that elsewhere :) But gosh, I wish those that were bagged didn't ask questions I couldn't answer! See you again soon, I'm sure!!

Rose, I had trouble seeing it too. The problem is that you can't see the depth of the box spring; it almost looks like a blanket has been spread out. It would never cross my mind that the bumps were springs--a blanket on the ground also has bumps from whatever it's on. I think the moral of the story is that, generally, the focal point of the shot should be what cues you to the challenge topic. I've learned that lesson here a time or two myself!

WOW, what a WIDE range of scores here! Ok, let me EXPLAIN this to others. The dog's name is not Garbage. LOL...I nearly split a gut when I read those comments because the actual garbage is taking up over 1/4 of the photo. The "garbage" is the old box spring he is laying on.

Since this question was asked several times, I guess this angle was not the best. I thought everyone would be able to easily see this is a box spring, outside, since you can see grass and weeds around it. Obviously no normally clean person just lies their box spring outside. I never dreamed some would not see the garbage in this photo.

I was riding the neighborhood and really was just taking pics of this dog. When he laid on the box spring I took a few shots, but at the time I really thought the box spring took away from the shot. When I realized it was actual "garbage" and good for this contest, and in the time frame, I decided it was not just garbage but it would be cute with the dog in it.

Sorry some of you had trouble. Getting a couple of 10's and a 9, and a wide range of votes above average was a nice surprise. It amazes me how about 1/2 got it and 1/2 did not. :)

Thanks for voting! I just wish more got it than 1/2.

Rose

The mat looks too good or too nicely laid out for garbage, or is "Garbage" the name of the dog?

What a cutie of a dog! For me, it doesn't say garbage as well as other entries, but maybe because I love animals so much and this one really does look sweet. I like the white in the background as it helps move my eyes from the dog to the back of your photo.

Nice idea, the dog could been in better focus.

cute doggie - i don't see much of garbage in this - I assume the doggie is laying on an old box spring - which would make this meet the challenge, - it's not very obviuos though - good luck :)

it's hard to see what the garbage is in this situation. is it the stuff behind the dog, or the tarp it's lying on? the shot is nice, if a bit underexposed.

Where is the garbage? Is it the dog's name??
