The view at Kaaterskill falls, in the Catskills. I had been there several weeks before on a GTG with Shannon, but that time the wind was fierce and there was so much water that it was difficult taking pictures, since your lens/filter kept getting wet.

This time I went back and the water was less fierce having runnoff the overflow from rains. But still beautiful! The person in the photo was a stranger, but he spent a lot of time in that spot, and I thought he made a great addition to the shot, for size/perspective.

Fortunately, he didn't move much, making my long exposures work with his presence. I took some with and without him, but I like the scale he provides, which would otherwise be difficult to see in this perspective shot.

Thanks to everyone for your comments--it's interesting to see the split between people who liked and didn't like my choice of photo with the person! I'm honored, however, to have taken 8th place with such a great batch of photos!

The person adds extra interest no doubt. But for me you captured a scene so real and natural that it deserves praise. Praise that you didn't boost this and alter that. But you know, fall brings cold and things simply turn brown and dull this time of the year and you brought that truth to your photo.

This is so stunning! A beautiful waterfall, amidst the beautiful fall tones! Congratulations on such an amazing finish. In so many other challenges, a score like this would have easily won a ribbon!

Neil,
Congratulations on a great finish. The little figure in the image really sets it apart showing the "immensity of nature" -- like the style in Hudson River School paintings!

The person in red added so much to this. Shows just how big this fall is. Congrats on a top 10 finish.

Now THIS is a great waterfall shot. I love the person in the red coat adding perspective.

Contrary to what some have said, I think that the person in red totally makes the shot, especially given that part of the challenge was to make a landscape "refreshing." It's refreshing to see a person in red actually fit meaningfully into a landscape shot. The sense of perspective is indeed awe-inspiring.

"Nature In Perspective" indeed! I love how the person on red gives everything else a sense of hugeness. Could be slightly sharper, but that's extremely tough to do with a shot like this. Well done!

This is a beautiful photo. I think this could be a ribbon if it wasn´t for that person in red. It´s disturbing. I´ll give it 7

one of my favorites in this challenge - like the composition, perspective and depth - the person in red really helps with this - the softness of the water - it's just right - not over done - nice work :)

Never been a big fan of putting a figure in for perspective, but this is an excellent shot.

Good job. I love the person standing in the center of the picture. It give a much better perspective to the size of the falls.

This would make a great "where's Waldo" entry! It reminds me of one from "Shutter Speed". Nice work!

Very nice picture! Love the rich colors, DOF, shutter effect. I'm still thinking about whether or not I like the person in red in the shot - can't decide if it detracts from the picture, or adds a sense of wanting to be there. Nice picture overall though.

Very clever expression of scale, putting a person in red in a right place. Sometimes picture really suffers from inability to evaluate scale, comparing with objects of known size. Cool place, cool photo...9

Stunning. Excellent composition and the water looks amazing. I know you can't clone out objects for basic editing but I would remove the person, print and frame.

I think the blown out sky distracts a lot from the main subject here, although otherwise the composition is great.
