WOW! Very exciting! I feel embarressed getting this ribbon with so many other great entries!

Over the last few weeks, I have ended up with 20 new baby chickens to three Mothers! This one was the lightest one I could find and only about a week old.
It took more then 30 shots to achieve this, as the little bugger would keep running away. I set the f/stop to 2.8 to get the blurring of the background. This was about the only shot I actually got his face in focus.

Thank you all that voted! Its really made my day!

i think Membermacrothing was hypercritical of your photo. i think its wonderful, i love you focus and everything else as well. i can never seem to get good pictures of my chicks cause the hens freak out too bad for me to take them away for a little bit. and the chicks are super quick runners

Great focus on the chick's head. Must have taken a ton of shots to get it to look at the egg shell.

Nice use of lighting, the crisp shadows are great. Also, a great idea and the limited color adds to it because of the simplicity.

like the sharp chicken in the pic.

5 - Do like this but - Criticism; main subject is too dark in my opinion to be able to effectively have the technical challenge of not blowing highlights. I would like to have seen the egg also in focus (especially for the Challenge and the highlight/technical issues, but this is a good shot as is), and be able to 'see' how well you did with not blowing the light color of the eggshell against the white background.

I'm not sure it that was your intention, but the bottom of the photo is out of focus, especially the chick's fett and the egg.

chicks legs oof, and a TAD too dark for my taste in a light on white, but nice photo overall

10/26/2005 02:51:37 PM
Cute! I think the lighting might have been a little strong which makes the inside of the shell disappear and gives stronger shadows. I like the composition.

Great lighting, sharpness and detail. And of course an outstanding idea. Only one thing in my opinion would be to maybe change the DOF to make part of an egg as sharp as the chick, so it brings out the title more of whether the chicken or the egg. Hopefully a ribbon winner.

I really like this idea and the chicken is perfect, but the fact that a lot of the picture is out of focus really bothers me.

Darling little chick. Maybe a tad too dark for "light" but he sure is a cutie. The DOF is good and I like the composition.

So far, the best I've seen. A white eggshell would've gotten an extra point, maybe two.

Just a little more DOP would have made this a cooler shot. Very nice picture though. 8
