I have wanted to do this for the longest time ever and figured this challenge would be a good time to give it a try. I really really wish i had advanced editing, this was a very hard shot to take. I picked this out of about 60 outtakes and then spent about 2 hours editing with raw, selective color, color balance, neat image, usm, and hue/sat. I almost gave up a few times but stuck with it.

The setup was a glass with water infront of a picture of a goldfish inside a homemade light tent (pvc frame + white bed sheet + lots of desk lamps outside). The splash was created by dropping a nickel into the glass, in retrospect the nickel worked great because it almost passes for a reflection of the goldfish on the bottom of the glass. And under the glass was white paper, which i had to change many times when when it got soaked. (originally i was pouring water from a cup from above to try to get the splash and by the end my dorm room was kinda like a little aquarium :-))

I agree, I think the nickel makes it more convincing as it does look like a reflection.. Has anyone asked if you took the picture of the goldfish? (Just kidding, I am sure ya did) I give ya a 20 just for the awesome dedication involved in this! Excellent!

First of all does it meet the challenge? Yes I believe it does... as do others because you got a ribbon! Congrats on a wonderful job :-)

OK now on to specifics :-)

First of all let me say that I really like this image... it's just plain fun, which I like!

Composition wise - I think you did a very good job... even though the glass and fish are centered, I think that it works here, because of what you were going for. I'm glad to see that you left quite a bit of room at the top for your little fishy to fly into ;-) I think it would have felt quite cramped if you hadn't.

I am not against a little bit of trick photography... I think your idea was creative and fun, and who cares how you get the image, it's the image you get!

Great job with your lighting and exposure, as well as your post processing... I think you did an excellent job getting everything just perfect... and the fish looks absolutely gorgeous!! Interesting setup you are talking about... I'll have to play around with that perhaps in my own dorm room (when I can find a patch of floor to set up on :-).

I notice in your comments that you used a nickel to make the splash and that you feel it worked well because it passes as a reflection of the goldfish... this is my one nitpick. I disagree with you on the reflection thing, and I feel that the extra color in the bottom of the glass draws my eye away from the fish and the splash... that however is just my opinion.

Despite that... I think you did a wonderful job!! Congrats on your ribbon.

It's a good shot, but I've always felt these kinds of trick-photography images shouldn't be allowed to ribbon. It takes a lot of skill get everything right, but it's essentially two photos composited together. I prefer au naturale.

This is one of those shots that you just KNOW is going to ribbon. All you can do is give it the requisite 9 or 10 vote and move on to the runners up. Later, you come back and shake your head at the fifteen people who gave this a 2 or 3.

if it weren't for a few minor slashes on the backround ( or is it the glass keeping the camera dry?) this would be a great shot, as is it should ribbon. I like the way you gave the glass the gravity and framed for fishies hopefull flight. If only his scales were as well capptured as the water swirl.....

Awesome action shot. Just a downright awesome picture. If there's anything I could suggest, which may be just a matter of taste though, it would be to up the shutter speed just slightly to freeze the splashing water even more. Hope to see a ribbon on this one.

Clever and interesting. I'd like more negative space to one side, so that the glass and fish aren't bullseye target centered. Great execution of an action shot. The background has pale pink and blue striations - maybe it's my monitor.
