The scary thing about this picture is that it is a live railroad. I wasn't too sure about having my five-year-old running around, but he was a good boy. Took about 30-40 shots in various poses and stuff. Liked this the best as it has a nice foreground subject. Caden like the "hobo stick" the best. He said it looked cool in black and white.

Post production: rotate slightly, levels, contrast, channel mixer, USM, border.

Love it. I did that when I was little and came away with a very dirty face, hehe.

Hello from the Critique Club

This is a wonderful photo. One of those photos that tells a story, or the viewer can create a story from. The attention to detail, like the "hobo" bag is wonderful. Terrific perspective as the rail guides the eyes into the back of the photo.

I also find the use of black and white very effective, and gives it a 1950ish feel to me. Good contrast too.

For me, the only thing I would be interested in seeing differently would perhaps be a slightly thinner black border. Overall, a great shot and one to be proud of.

Fascinating composition with the charm of b/w. Congratulations on your top 20 finish.

I cant believe someone wanted the train in the picture! You dont have to listen for the train when you can SEE it!!!
I admit the thumb looked a bit morbid, but the full view you see the hobo stick and it is more that apparent that hes a runaway looking to catch a ride.
I think its a great storyboard.

Sheesh.........

From some of the lame comments, you would think people had never heard of listening to the rails.........

Sorry I don't get some of the negative remarks. How is a kid listening for a train thru rail vibration morpid or creepy? Great job. Wished it placed higher.

Haha bear. Yes this is an excellent shot. You took the cliche railroad perspective and added a twist on it. The hobo stick almost makes the picture as it gives you the feeling he IS walking the tracks. Excellent job.

Great finish Doc! I loved this shot. I am amazed that people think it's "suicidal", LOL. Hell, even I used to listen for trains, and I am DEAF...

A little too "posed" for my taste, but good idea.

This is a great photograph, however it terrifies me from a railway perspective encouraging a small child to be around a train track.

I don't think this is very funny at all. The composition is well done, but the subject is distasteful.

I don't know if you can tell, or if it's just me. The shot seems a tiny bit twisted when comparing the top of the bridge to the border. Don't worry. I wouldn't dock you for that! Awesome depth of field and love the contrast. It's right on.

OHMYGOD that is soooo creepy! I thought the little kid's head was smashed open and he lay dead on railroad tracks, not cool. Try someting less scary and realistic.

You little suicidal child! Your background is very distracting.
