This is too funny. I love the expression on the dog! I get into staring contests with my dog all the time. He always wins.

FROM THE CRITIQUE CLUB

Hello Randy,

I am glad this picture ended up with a good score, because it is a very good shot. My main "complaint" is the title, "Comfortable Silence". Somehow, the silence does not look comfortable exactly, more "wary" (on the dog's side) or even just a bit confrontational. It looks to me like the man is winning the staredown.

The white background is striking (btw, how did you get it so white?). The edges (hairs) around the top of both heads look slightly "lost" (I think "blown out" is the term that's used for this). Focus is good, could be slightly sharper, but it's good. Sepia is a good choice IMO. Simple border is perfect.

The more I sit here and look at this picture, the more I think, "I like it, but there's something that's bothering me about it, and it's NOT the title." One thing that strikes me is that the shape of the dog comes from below (from the bottom up), whereas the man comes from the side (from the left). Makes the man look somewhat aggressive (IMHO) compared to the dog. Also, the large amount of white space attracts a lot of attention that possibly should be spent on the figures instead.

I don't think I have any good advise on how to make a good shot like this better, sorry. It's a good shot. It causes a pretty strong reaction in the viewer, which is very good. I guess I'll stop here.

Congratulations on an excellent finish! BTW, I love your shot of the mountains and the moon! It looks like a painting almost.

Take care,

Ursula (uabresch)

nice composition and I like the stark white bg. Though it looks like the dog is winning the staring contest. :)

I don't know...the one with the big ears looks pretty guilty to me...

Awesome Photo! Really made me smile:) Great composition. Am very impressed with the lighting - I think it is amazing how you were able to light both subjects so well simultaneously. Good tones, meets challenge very well. Good background and border choices as well. Very, very high score!

lol...too cute! nice tones...wonderful expressions. well done!

Wonderful stuff! Duotones capture the scultped lines of the expressions better than color would I feel, so this meets the challenge very well. Magnificent lighting and composition. Great photography. 10

lol. this really made me smile. the expressions are worth a million. nice lighitng and choice of color, although it looks more natural on the dog. great job. 10

The dog looks very guilty!!! Love the expressions - great subject - thanks for something different.

I like this photo, cool expressions - 9.

The white background is a little distracting, but as I looked at every photo, this is one of the few that really stayed with me until days later. I like the expressions a lot, and the tones are very rich. Nice work!

I like the eye contact between these two. I'm not sure I feel it is a comfortable silence - the man looks more like he is imparting a telepathic lesson to the dog and the dog is attening carefully. The detail in and the sweep of the dogs fur is really lovely - while it is sharp in focus I can imagine how soft it would be to touch. The form of the dog is more 3d than the man - perhaps another light at aninterscting angle or have the man turn his face a little more to the camera to get more depth. There is a lot of white space which doesn't really mean anything - perhaps the space is filled by the comfortable silence? I would have to see that more in theri expressions. I'd have the dog and man on a level - there wouldn;t be as much space over the dog that way.6

Did you take a picture with head turn a little towards the camera, the same turn as the dog? just wondering.
05/27/2003 11:03:46 PM
I don't know if the dog is comfortable getting stared down, it looks a little apprehensive to me. Title aside, I love the photo, the tone, subjects and expressions!
05/27/2003 08:24:44 PM
The eyes really make this photo....and of corse the pure white background....good job.

This is a most intriguing shot. I originally gave this a 5, but I'm moving it up one, maybe 2 after I write this. The look on the dog's face is very personified, like "what were you thinking?" The stark white background is a very fitting one. This could be a frame from an old advertisement for dog food or something. It's really a nice shot and a very good job capturing the stare from this canine ham. Nice work.

Nice image. Very well done and a good example of duotone. 8 Morgan

I like it! It looks to me like it could be slightly sharper, but it's a great concept. It looks like something that could be used in an advertisement, although I'll admit I have no idea for what :) Could be a great image for a "Caption This Photo" contest!

No doubt about it, a great photo. I get a smile to my face when viewing it.
It takes me back to the time when I also had a dog and the good times we enjoyed.
Thanks for submitting it.

Familiar style...can't put my finger on it. Not sure it matters, but the title doesn't work for me. It doesn't affect your score, so whatever works. I love the idea and composition. Nice job. 9

This is great. Definitely made me giggle. Nice work!
05/26/2003 11:19:53 PM
Sweet dog! Look a bit more like Uncomfortable Silence in my opinion. Good job.
05/26/2003 10:29:06 PM
Oh how cute, what a expression on them both, wonderful over-all quality shot!
05/26/2003 10:12:26 PM
A picture is worth a thousand words. I love it! Made me laugh out loud. The use of sepia with a white background is unique. Good focus and composition.
05/26/2003 04:28:33 PM
lol. That is funny. Who won the staring contest? I say it's the dog. Great coloring. Good work. Jacko. 9 Thanks for th smiles
05/26/2003 01:44:24 PM
Well done. Many stories can come of it!

Fun shot to look at. Made me smile.
05/26/2003 09:13:07 AM
Neat shot and great color. The silence doesn't look 'comfortable' to me though. Looks like the man is sternly looking at the dog and the dog is like 'I'm busted'. Hee.
05/26/2003 08:28:26 AM
Great expressions, nicely done. 7
05/26/2003 01:33:43 AM
Great DOF/focus. I like the look of intensity. Who won the staredown? (C:
05/26/2003 12:26:04 AM
I dont think it 'looks' comfortable. LoL.
