Challenge: What is the Matrix? (Classic Editing)
Camera: Fujifilm FinePix S602Z

This was the first idea i had - came to me as soon as I read about the challenge, and I didn't have a better one.

Shooting details - it's a print of a shot I took a couple of weeks ago, printed at home, torn (twice) and then stood on some cassette cases, underneath it I positioned an old video card (real nerds will be able to tell which one). Light is just daylight from a cloudy day, with a little low fill-in from a 100w desk lamp tp pick up details of the video card. 602 on tripod, and that's it.

I considered placing the tear higher up the frame - more directly on tthe thirds line, but I think having the blue sky available is more important to the image - given the haze over the city, it's the most 'real world' component.

And of course I should acknowledge a certain homage to carsten's 'open up your eyes', which probably left the idea floating around for me.

to the person below---- all of the matrix is cheesy to me, that doesn't mean this isn't a great shot!

This is a really cool shot, it seems so simple to execute but the effect is really trippy.

Congrats!! I didn't vote on this challenge as I have never seen the movie and didn't think I could do it fairly. However, from what I understand, you have done an excellent job at meeting this challenge. I found this picture to be extremely well set up and shot. It is one of those that makes me go, "Dang, I wish I'd thought of something like that." Very creative, I think. The only minor nitpicky thing I could even imagine to say would be that I wish it was a bit wider. But upon reading your comments, both before voting and after, I think I understand why you did it that way. Even after reading about what you were calling distortion, I don't think it is noticeable at all. If it does anything, it adds to the shot by giving a feelign of some depth.

Great work. I know this probably doesn't help you "improve" the shot, but I don't know that I could help anyway.

Best to you in future challenges.

Nicely done. Making a goodphotograph of a photograph is a feat in itself. Very creative the way you've set it all up.

Talk about absolutely nailing the challenge!

This is the first time in over 6 months of voting I've seen a shot and known immediately that it was the winner.
I've also never seen a voting curve that looks like it doesn't tail off until about 17 either! Superb.

My toaster is now officially worried. Well done : )

Oh my - what a fabulous feeling. Whoooo.

I thought as soon as I got the idea (and that was almost as soon as I read the challenge) that it would be a winner, provided I could control the reflections in the glossy paper - and that proved to be no problem. Had to drop more of the tear than I wanted due to it saying 'Epson' on the back. What I didn't expect was to be up in this rarefied air of 22nd ever (and 3rd with the 602z).

JJ - the air feels great, as you should know very well!

Fiver - unlucky - it's a Creative/S3 Savage 4 :-)

One thing no-one picked up on that really bothered me: the perspective distortion of the video card beneath the picture (I couldn't shoot from directly overhead because of reflections, nor could I tilt the set-up). There actually is that same distortion in the sunset, but it doesn't register, and I thougght it clashed visually.

Anyhow - huge thanks for all the votes: you've all made me outrageously happy.

PS. and when i checked in this morning, hoping like crazy there wasn't anything to beat it, the site was down! Pure agony for about an hour :-)

Wow. Excellent shot. Deserves the first place.

As for the Video Card... I don't consider myself a nerd, but my first thought would be ATI. Maybe one of their Rage series.

the matrix is such a good movie, good reprensentation

05/21/2003 01:44:52 PM
The urban landscape is out of focus, the border is too bold, the paper is torn ! Just kidding -

this is an interesting and truly different take on the matter. The collage does not 'lift' anything from the movie either! Well done.

Able to capture very clear and sharp shooting at the background of the sunset. I nearly get tricked !! That is not a real sunset ^ ^..just look so real :) If the sunset represent our reality, then circuit path represent our fantasy world. Bring out the matrix feel !! 8
