I took this shot at the Golden Spike National Historic Site near Promontory Summit, UT. Reenactments of the "Driving of the golden spike" are held every Saturday (I think) during the summer. It was great to be there and take a few pictures (around 150). Like vtruan commented, they are beautifully colored trains but for this challenge I used the sepia tone to try to catch the feeling of the time.

Wow, my first ribbon and image that had to be validated. All I can say is thanks to everyone who voted. I am so happy with this you don't even know. I didn't know if I would ever win a ribbon in the mix of such great photographers. Thank you so much.

This image was recommended for DQ and I just want to say thanks to GeneralE for helping me with the submission process.

I am going to hang my ribbon!!!

Only the pavement in the foreground gives away the time period of this image. It's just superb!
I just purchased an authentic steam whistle on flea bay, I wonder if it was on one of these engines in the 1860's.

Congrats on first ribbon! Fascinating processing look on this one. It's a pity there's pavement visible, but that's a nit; if it were advanced editing you could easily deal with it.

However you managed to get a picture of this, you did amazing! From a subject standpoint, it is classic. Photo wise, it retains the feel of a period photo. Very well done! 10

more contrast please, well at least blacker blacks - they just happened to reinact this during the challenge heh?

A bit bright, but good content and decent composition.
Standing back and using a long telelens would compress the scene more, it would give less of a distant look.

Add just a little grain and I wouldn't believe that this was actually taken this week but in the 1860's. I really like the light sepia tone. 8

Great capture and couldn't be a better fit for the challenge. I can't help but think that this may have been better with a little further post editing to give it that true old time look and feel. For sure, you have too much time on your hands! I give it a 9. First page material no doubt.

This is a great photo, but I am a bit concerned. You either:
a) Have way too much time and money on your hands to compose such a great picture
b) Spent way too much time tracking down the perfect picture for this submission
c) Cheated!

Either way... great pic! Should finish in the top 3.

Promontory Point. What an opportunity to shoot for this challenge. This is well done in every way. The soft tone fits the era well. 9

Okay, I've browsed through all of the entries, IMHO this HAS GOT TO PLACE IN THE TOP THREE! Beautiful photo, I really like the woman in the white dress, she stands out well but is not too distracting. The driving of the spike is well captured; the detail in the trains is just amazing. The one thing about this picture that is a bit off is the sidewalk, but even that really didn't jump out at me off the bat. Great job, I really, really hope this places, you deserve it!
