A Dental highspeed handpiece with fiberoptics taken with a Canon EF 100mm 1:2.8 macro. The backround is a stainless steel sink. ISO 400, Aperture 5.0, Speed 1/40 sec. A mix of fluorescent and natural light. No flash. The handpiece was running at a full 500,000 rpms. The image was slightly cropped, sharpened, increased saturation and Neat Image used.

Thanks to everyone for voting my picture to a 2nd place ribbon. It is always a great thrill to have one's image do well amongst such a talented group of fellow DPCers. Being a member of DPC has been a wonderful experience and has helped me develop my photographic skills. I strive to continue to improve and I hope to ribbon again soon!!

I never thought dental drill could be such a fasinating subject. You've mangaged to take a tool most ppl really don't like and put it in a creative and interesting compostion. Really well done. I saw this in the voting and liked it, but didn't have time to comment.
Good job and keep up the good work.
Now frame it and give it to your dentist, or if you're a dentist hang it up in your waiting-room.

Congratulations! Very cool shot, my first thought was how did you do that without getting mist on your lens! I have a good friend who's a dentist, and I thought about going there for the challenge but didn't. I'll have to show him this. Congrat's again.

(p.s. their called burs not bits ;) )

Hi Scott,
Yes, I know they are called "Burs". Just thought "Bit" would be more easily recognizable and understood by non dental individuals :)

7 - Met the Challenge. I like the capture of the spray coupled with the light. Criticism; I would like to see said capture in more detail. I do not know if you have adjusted the color of the little light , but if you have, in my opinion I think a different color would have worked better to highlight the metal, perhaps blue. I would like to see a sharper focus on the drill?, and as I said more detail on the spray. The background is bland, and in my opinion needs 'something' to lift the subject up, but you may not have had any choice there. Original.
