 Yes the grass is really this green. The red color is a canyon wall that runs close by the tower. The Belle Fourche River runs along the red canyon.

In 1906 President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed Devils Tower the first national monument under the new Antiquities Act.

There's a story that the Kiowa People tell of the creation of Devils Tower:
"Eight children were there at play, seven sisters and their brother. Suddenly the boy was struck dumb; he trembled and began to run upon his hands and feet. His fingers became claws, and his body was covered with fur. Directly there was a bear where the boy had been. The sisters were terrified; they ran and the bear after them. They came to the stump of a great tree, and the tree spoke to them. It bade them to climb upon it, and as they did so it began to rise into the air. The bear came to kill them, but they were just beyond its reach. It reared against the tree and scored the bark all around with its claws. The seven sister were borne into the sky, and they became the stars of the Big Dipper."

A fine shot, needs a little cropped top and bottom to fit standard size. Good job bringing out the color from what looks like a flat lighting situation.

beautiful colors! Would a more horizontal crop be even better? Loosing some of the white clouds and a bit of the grass would focus the image more.

GREAT shot as this monument rises dramatically amongst all of that color. Sky adds drama, too. I'm waiting for UFOs to land there.

Very postcardy, and technically speaking a beautiful shot. The only thing that kept it at 9 and not 10 for me was a lack of a certain spung, that magic 'Wow!' spark. But I have to save 10s for *something*, right? :-> I love the rich colors.

Hi Sonifo. Great shot, the clouds make the tower look threatening and the green grass is just amazing. We took our kid to see this a couple of years ago and then we all watched 'Close Encounters'. 8

We have been there many times... Eight-with each trip to Sturgis. Very pretty. That ride up to the tower is really pretty but the whole place is a little spooky feeling. Good shooting.

I always get a creepy feeling when I see this.. remembering the "Close Encounters" movie... I think you captured this landscape at a particularly good time with the clouds in the scene. For me, it seems to enhance the 'creepy' theme that already comes to mind for me when I see this. I looked around in the sky for some evidence of UFOs in your photo but couldn't see any :( Keep up the good work :)

Very nice colors..perhaps the fore groud is a little too much. You can crop a little in front and a little on the right and that may help.7
