Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Sports II (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Lens: Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM
Location: Frostaskjol, Reykjavik
Date: Jul 11, 2005
Aperture: 2.8
ISO: 800
Shutter: 1/1000
Galleries: Sports, Photojournalism
Date Uploaded: Jul 11, 2005

Taken in horrible conditions, it was raining, very cloudy and pretty late in the evening too so it was very dark, therefore 800 iso and as I was only taking pictures for this challenge I knew I would never need the shot in great quality, only about 600 pixles wide so I underexposed it almost 1 full stop in order to get a higher shutterspeed in an effort to stop the motion more.

This is by far the best shot I got the whole game. This was taken at a match between two local football clubs, KR (black and white) and Fylkir (orange and black) at the KR stadium, Frostaskjol. Fylkir won the game very convincingly 3-1.

Minimal post processing done, just adjusted the exposure and pushed the contrast way up in C1 in an effort to hide most of the noise, cropped to a 1:1 ratio and did a small "S" curve + resized/sharpened in photoshop.

Edit after the challenge:

I can´t really say that I excpected the red ribbon for this since the image quality in this image isn´t good at all, I was hoping for an 6.5+ though since I really liked the moment. I am extremely pleased with the ribbon as sports shooting is hardly my venue. Thanx for all the encouraging comments but I would also appreciate some constructive critizism as I know I could have done this better, I am all ears if you have any advice.

On a small side note I am especially pleased I beat Andri this time since we were practically side by side the whole game and our shots are of the same moment, his just fractions of a second later. Just for the record we did not talk to each other on what shot we were submitting so this was a coincidence that we both submitted the same moment.

Perfectly titled. Wow! This is a great action shot. Well composed and nice choice of shutter speed to freeze the players.

Unbelievable timing.
I am especially impressed at how you setup the exposure to make the shot.
Congrats on your second ribbon Larus.

My entry was also from this same game, and I can vouch for Larus and Andri that they were indeed both taking pictures side by side at the game - I was there with them for the first half and at the other end of the field for the second half, when these photographs were shot.

All in all, I think there were 6 if not 7 DPC'ers at the game - at least. The reason is probably that we don´t have that many sport events here in Iceland during the timeframe of a week, except for football. This match was by far the most prestigious one during that week as the two teams are the two largest/most successful teams in Reykjavik, the capital city(and only city I might add ;).

p.s: Til hamingju með borðann kvikindið þitt ;)

To answer Andy, Larus and I did indeed go to the same soccer match and we stood right by each other when we took those two, admittedly, similar shots.
It might seem strange that we submit such similar shots even though we went to the same game but I can assure you that this was not planned on our behalf as Larus and I did not know of each other submissions until after the voting had started. Quite a coincidence, eh?
In addition, I might mention that it should be obvious to most people that my picture and Larus's have a quite different look to them (colour etc.) and the background is very different which, to me at least, shows that they were taken from different vantage points and were processed with different methods. Perhaps it's moot to explain this as the site council will undoubtedly see when they receive the original files that these two shots were taken on two different cameras.

(As an aside a similar thing happened to me and another photographer in the 'Abandoned' challenge where the entries in the 3rd and 4th place were of the same house.)

I could also mention that Larus and I were not the only ones to submit photographs from this game as Sjonni and hrutsen also submitted a picture from this exact match.
And to boot Arnit, Siggi and skarason also all submitted photographs from the same game.

Anyway, congratulations for your red ribbon, Larus!!

I just wanna say that this shot and the number 4, all we need is the ball, by Andri, must be disqualified because they are made by the same author: you can easly see that they are the same teams and the same players in the same city in the same day.

Great shot but not correct

I feel this is the best futebol shot of the week. The players in synch above the ground is stunning. One of my top 10 favorites for this challenge. One question ... did you pick this title because you thought this shot was about the grass or just afraid someone might miss the turf flying around? No chance of the latter.

Jáááá, þessi er nokkuð góð. Hefði samt viljað hafa boltan aðeins nær action-inu þar sem maður á erfitt með að átta sig svona fyrst hvernig málin standa á þessari mynd. Hver fór í hvern? Af hverju er þetta gras allt þarna? Hvernig kom það til? og svo framvegis. En ég býst við því að vélin sjálf hafi misst af því momenti, kannast við það vandarmál :)
