Taken at the foot of Purgatory Mountain, VA, late this afternoon (about 7pm) overlooking fresh bales of hay. Tried to get a feel for the immense size of the field, but the lens just wouldn't do it justice. The fields go on for miles it seems. Realized that there were circles there everywhere and decided at the last minute to enter the Circle Challenge.

Regardless of score, I'm happy with the shot. :-)

I almost submitted a similar shot. Living in a rural area surrounded by farms it is a common sight around here. But I never thought of one in B/W. I like this image and the b/w works well here. I read the other comments...I think the hazy mtn. helps the image. Keeps you focused on the subject portion of the photo while letting you see the distance. Nice work!

Very nice composition. I would have liked some more contrast, or perhaps left it in color. The field and front portion just seem a bit dark to me.

I wish the tones were more defined here. Of all the hay pictures in this challenge - I think this one is tops. good job.

For this contest everyone who has the word “circle” in their title is getting a max 10 score. This is a copy and paste version that I am including in every photo that I upgrade to 10 due to the title. We as members of DPchallenge need to be reminded of the topic of the challenge – we really need to reread the topic every time we reach a photo. If circle is in the title and it is appropriate I will give a 10. I am sorry if you do not agree with my method of voting – but scores are all I have.

your title works but it almost got downgraded - almost

For this contest everyone who has the word “circle” in their title is getting a lower score. This is a copy and paste version that I am including in every photo that I downgrade due to the title. We as members of DPchallenge know the topic of the challenge – we do not need to reread the topic every time we reach a photo. If circle is in the title and it is appropriate I will most likely not down grade, but it better be good. I am sorry if you do not agree with my method of protest – but scores are all I have.

Of all the "rolls in the hay" in this challenge, this one is my favorite because there are more compositional elements involved to draw the eye to the subject in the foreground: the 'open arms' of the mountain slopes leading to the midground border of trees gives great depth of field. The nearly linear orientation of the other bales make the one in focus seem that much more unique, and therefor more interesting than the rest. Great shot!

whilst there are circles in the image, my eye is constantly drawn to the mountaintop, which becomes the subject of the photo. Only a minor criticism to an interesting photo, though. I'm curious to know why there are some very sharp features on the mountain edge without obvious sharpening artifacts nearby?

Crop Circles...and a pyramid. Interesting juxtaposition. ...and a nice shot.

It seems like the mountain is the subject here, not any circular shape.

I do however, like the shot. A little more contrast may help though, it feels a little flat.

Surprisingly a common theme. This is my fav of them though!

I love this photo! It's definitely one of my favorites that I've seen so far. Great choice to make it black & white - I imagine it was beautiful in color as well, but the impact would have been so much different. Gorgeous tones and composition. Good luck!

Nice mood, clever title. 6 Next time do the other kind of crop circles, and I'll double your creativtiy points! : )

The DOF is good. I find the hazy mountain in the background a touch distracting for some reason. Maybe it's the time of day. I wish the sky had more contrast.

Very nice idea.

I appreciate the originality of the titleing, nice touch.

IMO the comp is ok, the dof excellent, whites need work, blacks ok, mountain too soft, lighting fg ok, lighting bg ok but that mountain again, sky a bit blown, overall a nice pix.
