Take Flight (number 1)

Bout 1 of 135 photos I took of birds this week in about 5 different photo shoots (including an Oregon DPC GTG). Finally got one today, day of the challenge, that I was satisfied enough to enter. So, today, I went out (with camera, tripod, and old bread) to the beach and started tossing it to the seagulls. Soon, I had a large following. I tried many different ways of trying to capture an action shot like this. For this one, I set 3 burst mode and self timer, counted down in my head, ran around the side and spooked them when my head's count down was at 0.

Editing: healing/cloning annoyances, auto color/levels, bw, duo blue, mild dodge/burning, size, neat image, noticed horizon and rotated, usm.

i think this is the best shot from this challenge..there is life here, and wonderful context..your timing is perfect, levels spot on...the reflections that result from the angle are wonderful..and the thing that i don't quite get..this shot hits me emotionally and i don't particularily like birds, avoided the challenge..scanning through saw this and am taken with it..you have a wonderful eye for composition!

There is that damn beach again! Although I don't normally like a horizon that splits the screen this one works with the birds in the air and the reflections on the wet sand. Good jop.

I think this one is much better than the first. The composition is very nice, especially the placement of the rocks, and it has a good range of tones. I love the smooth look of the sand and sky too.

Great job Zoomer! Maybe even another ribbon for you (as if you need another one.)

Lovely image and unusual too. Black and white strengthens it a lot. Horizon seems to really cut the picture in two though I like both the cloud detail and sand with bird reflections, I think I'd prefer to see more of the latter... 7

I hate seagulls - but I love your image - the reflections, the sky, the movement. Works great in B&W 10

Love this shot, Not the prettiest birds, not the most colourful or the most detail but there is something that sets this apart from the crowd. Love it and adding it to my favourites. 10

Beautiful! I love the black & white, the blackness of the sand is gorgeous and the reflections are terrific. I might have like to have seen a little of where they are going, but I suppose you might have had to give up the almost triangular cluster, which I really like a lot. Well done!

stunning cpature! A slight shame that the bird on the LHS has its head out of frame - if poss, would crop with him fully inside it.

Very nice, one of the few b/w shots in the challenge and it makes it stand out more wich is good and frankly I donĀ“t think I would have liked this as much if it had been in colour. Love the tones and the clarity. Only to nitpick, you cut off one seagulls head to the left and it sticks out like a sore thumb to me but still I like this image a lot. Great job!

I love this photo! I rarely give a 10 as a score but this is definately deserving. It caught my attention right away and there is so much going on... light values, movement, texture... good job!!!

This shot is tight. Lots going on, great tones, tack sharp and well balanced. Had it been an option, it would have been good to either clone out or have included the full bird on the left that is missing it's head. Great work and good luck!

Dynamic composition and great "story" with these gulls in flight. I love the movement in this frame. Great choice for b/w also. Excellent use of black on white and white on black. Moody, coastal, energetic photo. My favorite in the challenge. 10
