The queue to get into hell.
Kind of a complicated shot. There's a stairway where I work that is completely blocked off from any other light. I set up one light at the top of the stairs so it would just hit the very top of each step. I set my camera at 30s and fired it off. Then I flashed the light on and off to light the top of the stairs, and then using a directional red light, I stood every other step and clicked it on and off of my feet. I had to hurry during each take, and it took a few times to get it right, but I like the results; we'll see how it does (crossing fingers).

Thanks for your 'Photographer's Comments' explanation of the technical side of your photo. I am even more impressed with your work now.

Why is this not in the top 10? It meets the challenge, it's composed nicely, great colours and it must have been technically impossible to execute so you definitely have the 'wow' factor. Hard luck, mate, I thought this should have done better.

Really cool image (and title) but isn't it beyond the simple editing rules for this challenge?

Walking with a torch?
Looks like it was hooded, to throw light from the knees down only.
Switched off, just before you moved, and switched on again when standing in place.
Very nicely executed

Humorous idea. Take a number! Next!

Sorry for the form-letter type commentary. I’m going to try to give almost everyone at least this breakdown to start. I would be happy to offer a more detailed opinion if you would like, though I don’t consider myself a very knowledgeable photographer.
Here is how I broke down my score for your submission.
Content: 1/4 (Is the subject compelling? Does the choice of content match the challenge?)
Composition: 1/2 (Is the work well balanced and successful?)
Color/Light: 2/2 (Is light and or color used with skill and artistic intent?)
Clarity: 2/2 (Is the picture in focus? Are the elements clear?)

I feel this is one of the few that meet the challenge....I really like how the feet are transparent too.

Very bizarre... but good.

Very cool! I like the use of reds in this and repetition of images.

Great concept.

Unique! Im not real fond of multiples, however this is stylized enough so to create design and impact. very good job. GoodLuck!

Great use of diagonal and repetition. For an image with such simple elements, it kept my attention for a long time.

Not entirely sure why, but this gives me the creeping willies - so if that was your intention 10 stars! Maybe i am just scare of the basement - i wouldnt know i've never had one.

The perspective, color, mood and title work well together. Nice work.

what is down there? Interesting approach to what I feel is a difficult subject to photograph....very ghost-like. I am voting this a 10!!

coooool, nice idea, good red exposure
06/16/2005 03:54:46 AM
Excellent idea and execution!

This photo is in my top two for this challenge. What an eerie, creepy great interpretation of darkness. I don't know how you managed to get all the feet exposed the same amount and lined up almost exactly the same. I love the implication that there is a line to get into hell (at least that's how I read it). Excellent use of perspective, excellent idea. I would love to hear how this one was done. 10.

Love the title! Very striking image, I enjoy the red on black look. Good clarity/focus, interesting use of the subject. Well done. 6

Great title and good execution. Very nice overall....8

border is a little distracting to me(specifically the red), but a great image. Conveys your message quite well. I understood it without the title. Great job.
