Challenge: Naturally Framed (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Lens: Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
Location: London - South Bank
Date: Jun 5, 2005
Aperture: f6.3
ISO: 1600
Shutter: 1/2500
Galleries: Cityscape, Action
Date Uploaded: Jun 5, 2005

An acrobat from 'Team Synergy' practices in front of the London Eye. The team were preparing for a show at West End Live.

Not a very special original but I liked the capture, while knowing that I could lean on post-processing to rescue the dynamic exposure.

This is an amazing capture!!! Love the color and the comp. 10 in my book!!! I am curious about the gradient mapping though, would you mind explaining what that is exactly??? Fantastic shot!!!

I think this is one of the best photos on the whole site. No joke. It's amazing. I love the colors, and the whole idea of the shot. The title is perfect.
  Photographer found comment helpful.
07/24/2005 07:50:20 PM
As nobody has mentioned the title I must. It's a very clever one. The wheel which spectators view the city from new heights, the up side down viewpoint of the acrobat and at last your viewpoint framing the former two.

Brilliant.

Very good idea , and very well executed.
After reading so-so reviews of the Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lense , this convinced me to get one.
Wow ;)

Ah dude, you are good. It's funny, but when I read Xion's post in the "frame" score thread saying his average was 10 after 8 votes with 2 faves and 1 wish list (if I remember right) I believed it (cuz Xion is good too!) and I went searching for his photo through the thumbnails and I immediately knew it HAD to be the orange one with the upside down dude...

Congrats Jon ! That is just an awesome photo. Such warm and rich tones. Of all your wonderful ribbon winners, this one is my favorite.

06/13/2005 06:01:18 PM
You certainly live up to your username. Congratulations. This reminds me of work by Henri Cartier-Bresson. One gripe I have is the tone of the image. It looks too much like a coffee stain. I wish it was a lighter tone. Other than that, this is excellent.
  Photographer found comment helpful.
06/13/2005 05:54:13 PM
Thanks so much for the warming comments. The 115 mentions here amount to a fair bit of time spent looking at this, so it does mean a lot to me (the best element of this site are, as ever, the written thoughts).

For the record, I was in two minds about the toning, but I did want something warm, radiant and eye-catching that reflected the energy of these amazingly supple gymnasts. They were all amateurs 'off the street' and thoroughly nice guys too. The photo does look quite busy at this size but I can tell you that the full size version is oozing with detail and little facets of interest. Here's a detail from the print:

Thanks again.
Jon

That damn London Eye..

When I saw this, I said to myself, "that's a sure-fire ribboner". I didn't say "blue".. but I had a feeling.

It's too bad I can only recognize ribbon winners when I see them in a challenge.. not when I shoot them myself.

This is terrific. So hard to do a stop action and get it within a "target" as you've done with the ferris wheel. Nicely done!!! This could be a ribbon winner.

If this is not imagineer's image I will be more surprised than if this does not win. Awsome shot (jon?), although I don't like the colouration, far too saturated for my taste, the image stands head and shoulders above the rest - 10

Now that's one heck of a good photo! I bet you had to have one or two attempts before you got this one! And I'm keen to know what editting you did to get the colours like that... especially the effect it has on the clouds.
I'll be surprised if this doesn't get you a ribbon. Well done

06/10/2005 11:51:36 AM
That's just awesome! I think the color is a little much but what a shot!
  Photographer found comment helpful.
06/10/2005 03:33:48 AM
Seems posed ;-)
Nice shot though, with creative formation process. The colors are nice. The shadow of the flipper is a slight distraction. Probably will end up as one of my higher scores in the challenge. Right now, let's do an 8, with possible bump. I'll do it a 10, because it is the most striking image in the challenge for me. Same sky/clouds as Pedro's horse shot in silhouette...

Awesome and daring capture. 7 on first round.
A very special effort with a unique concept. The post processing leaves a little to be desired but it is perhaps the best that can be done to present image as a silhoutte. You have my 9

Wow, atheletic model! Very eye catching. The man seems reminiscent of the circus, like he part of the acts/show. I might have preferred is you had a square frame and cut out most of the grass on the bottom.

06/06/2005 09:06:40 PM
Cool shot. Don't care for the processing - a simple B&W or sepia tone is more my style. This feels heavy and oversaturated for the feeling of fun that the subject evokes. I would also prefer either more light or no light on the face - the details are only visible to the point where it's kinda annoying. I love the composition.
  Photographer found comment helpful.
06/06/2005 06:10:50 PM
Wow this is like the best one ives seen. Too bad i cant vote in this one but it would defiantly be a 10. i really like how u can see the textures of the clouses and that the wheel looks like its tilting and the sepia colors are awome also. haha i wouldent be suprised if this turned out 1st

Excellent idea and superbly captured. I really dislike the orange toning - a true black and white or a more subtle toning would have appealed more to me and upped my vote.

06/06/2005 11:19:00 AM
Cool pic! The 'circle' got me first, I thought "Oh, I hadn't thought of that, a circle makes a nice frame!" I like 5 elements: the sky/farris wheel/gymnast/color/how low the camera is to the grass. Well done. Wouldn't change a thing.

I'll predict a ribbon for this because Ferris Wheel's always ribbon. ;-)
Actually this is a fantastic shot - everything in the composition is an interesting element, each in its own right - the wheel, the sky, the acrobat. GREAT job. 10
