Hi... Sorry I fogot to check this I was meaning to let you know. This shot was pretty simple. I used a piece of black construction paper, one side light, a tripod and 2 dice. The first dice is "still" in the picture. Then I worked on rolling the second dice behind the first one to give an effect of the second being the first. Hope that makes sense. I used 2 hands I was pressing the shutter while rolling the dice.

Connie, if you see this, I am really curious. How did you pull this one off? I am assuming a few tricks, like time exposure and maybe strobe, but try as I might to recreate this shot, I can't.

Please, please, please share your technique. (I gave you a nine for this one!) I know from the comments, I am not the only one. How about in Tricks and Tips section?

nice long exposure
too bad the hand couldn't have been a little less blurry
but i suppose that may have not been as realistic-looking, eh?
05/26/2002 11:21:00 PM
My favorite photo. I can't wait for the HOWTO on it.
05/27/2002 11:37:00 AM
cool. i wish the second die was also moving.
05/26/2002 12:31:00 AM
Nice multiple-exposure effect...
05/25/2002 07:36:00 PM
Great shot! I love the way you have captured the movement of the dice, but getting the final one to be in such great focus! How many times did you have to try this?
05/25/2002 02:39:00 PM
nice shot, look forward to finding out how you did this!
05/25/2002 08:09:00 AM
Great movement

Very well thought. Excellent light and use of strobe.
I think, however, that the hand could be a little more clear. It looks very fuzzy. I understand you wanted to show motion, but I think it needed something different.
Maybe, you could have got away with a little less noise removal.
Overall though, vert well thought and lit! Congrats!

Interesting effect. Almost looks like you used two dice, or covered the lens during exposure (no trail from the lower moving die to the one in fg). The blurry hand is a little distracting. You might have held it very still, then dropped the die to bounce off instead of moving your hand to drop it. Just an idea.

One of my favorite shots. great idea and good execution, would have liked it better with 2 dice but just my opinion.
05/24/2002 10:01:00 PM
Very nice shot .... well lit and creative.
05/24/2002 06:06:00 PM
This represents a lot of work with good results.
05/24/2002 12:19:00 PM
Very cool picture. Because this appeals to me, I have no criticism to offer! I wouldn't even change the lighting because I like the shadow
on the side of the dice. 10.
05/24/2002 09:52:00 AM
Nicely done.
05/23/2002 04:10:00 PM
Visually counting down for the throw - cool.
05/23/2002 03:27:00 PM
It looks much better in black and white. Try it! Good picture though.
05/23/2002 11:40:00 AM
How did you get this one? VERY tricky, how many seconds? I may have to try this one at home. Photo 10 *if legal Creativity 9 Games 8 total 9

Nice use of motion blur, but what's the game? Use some of that black space to tell me about the game.
05/23/2002 06:19:00 AM
I like the motion. Will be interested to hear about the exact technique. Fits the catagory well. I think it is missing something, just not sure what. I think it may have been better with more die (like in Yatzee).
05/22/2002 09:45:00 PM
it'd be better if u came up with a six
05/22/2002 02:35:00 PM
Yeah an action photo of a die being rolled, I like this shot its simple yet it conveys gameplay of some sort.
05/22/2002 11:50:00 AM
awesome picture
05/21/2002 09:46:00 PM
The motion blur on the die is very effective, but unfortunately the hand has become a big, pink blob, which I think is a bit distracting. Cool photo though.
05/21/2002 07:54:00 PM
Nice catch of this effect
05/21/2002 06:43:00 PM
I'm curious as to how you took this picture... At first I thought "good use of long exposure" yet there is no blur between the dice landing and rolling over. Is it infact two dice (ie: one stationary) ? Is this is a single exposure photo then you have done very well.
05/21/2002 04:51:00 PM
One of these days I gotta learn how to take a picture like this. Great job.
05/21/2002 03:57:00 PM
This is an awesome effect! How exactly did you do it?
05/21/2002 11:10:00 AM
Very nice
05/21/2002 10:23:00 AM
Nice action shot. Would probably have been even better if the dice with a 2 on top was either moving as well (just a bit) or wasn't so obviously blocking the path of the other one.
05/21/2002 10:16:00 AM
pretty cool. nicer if you'd rolled a 6 and called it 'High Roller' :) I'm guessing it took a while to get that shot anyway.
05/20/2002 07:20:00 PM
Best of the dice. Good transition shot.
05/20/2002 04:27:00 PM
This is one of my favorites this week... I really enjoy a photograph that does a crisp and clean job of relaying motion. Conveying motion in a photo effectively is difficult to do sometimes. I suppose that this shot is a rather long exposure with a single light source off to the left of the frame. I thought it may be second curtain sync but I'm not sure.. I would love to know! I'll hopefully see this one in the 'how'd they do that' section next week sometime! Good job! = 10
05/20/2002 02:51:00 PM
Just good, whole thing. Comp, DOF, sharp, clean! Wonderful job.
05/20/2002 01:57:00 PM
Good action shot.
05/20/2002 01:18:00 PM
Wow! Awesome use of shutter. I personally think it looks a lot better if you auto-level it. I think you've despeckled it, which always brightens the darker spots up a bit. Auto-level brings em right back down.
05/20/2002 12:19:00 PM
Nice capture of action. I find the movement right thru the center of the picture keeps bringing my eye to that spot.
05/20/2002 10:43:00 AM
Cool action shot
05/20/2002 06:36:00 AM
nice effect. well shot.
05/20/2002 01:04:00 AM
High roller? He got a 2!
05/20/2002 12:47:00 AM
Awesome effect, I have been trying to do something like this ever since I got a camera that does long exposures, I hope you'll explain how you got this just right! I only wish the hand were as sharp as the die-Great Job!
