Challenge: Late Night (Basic Editing III)
Collection: Portfolio
Camera: Canon PowerShot S1 IS
Location: Oakland, California, USA
Date: May 3, 2005
Aperture: 3.1
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/60
Galleries: Sky, Digital Art
Date Uploaded: May 3, 2005

Waning crescent moon and spruce(?) tree next door, shot from my front porch. All of my night shots typically have a lot of noise, so I wanted to shoot/compose something which would take advantage of it rather than fight to eliminate it.

It would look better if much of the sharpening wasn't wiped out by the amount of JPEG compression needed to squeeze this image under the 150kb entry limit.

Sort-of inspired by (the idea of) Van Gogh's famous painting.

-RGB Curve and color curves to separate the tree from the sky.
-USM at 400%/32 dia/TH=0 applied to Blue Channel to accentuate noise
-RGB and Green Curves
-USM at 200%/16 dia/TH=0 (not sure I included this step in final version)
-Blue Curve
-Cropped from the bottom to 3:2 ratio
-Reduced width to 600 pixels to save kb
-USM at 16%/64 dia/TH-0
-Save as JPEG at 6/10 quality setting

Wow, what a nice variety of comments! I knew a lot of people would hate this, but it's nice to see a sprinkling of the others as well.

While agree this was highly processed, I'm not sure it's really over-processed, considering what I was starting with:

Re-sized original capture.

The editing steps are listed in the Photographer's Comments area above.

This is a refreshing twist on this challenge. The image is not outstanding in itself but the effect you had created in post-editing brings it back to a high level of appeal for me. If you do not get slaughtered by the purists you might rankhigh. Goo luck!

i like the over processed moon ... nice bold approach ... does not work so well for the tree tho which should not dominate photo ... recomposed with more moon and less tree with same extreme post photo editing has good potential

I like the posterized effect very much around the trees. Neat glowing effect.

To be honest, I find the effect used on this photo somewhat distracting. But I do like the subject and it's placement to the moon. It's reminiscent of Van Gohg. But I think that for my own tastes I would have enjoyed seeing something less abstract.

Looks over sharpen or something does not look real

I think what really makes this shot is the moon. I can only guess that you're getting slammed in this challenge, but I respect the effort. I'd be interested to know if this was done with a high iso setting, or with photoshop. Nice glow around the trees by the way.

This looks more like a painting than a photograph. There's such a thing as being too heavily processed.

This is an interesting photo. I like the light shrouding the tree. The moon is odd however, to me. Interesting technique.

I think the hardcore post-processing effects detract from what the image could have been.
