Challenge: Minimalism (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Canon PowerShot G5
Location: My garden
Date: Apr 26, 2005
Aperture: F/5.6
ISO: 50
Shutter: 1/200 sec
Galleries: Black and White, Floral
Date Uploaded: Apr 26, 2005

This is a small flower in the garden; the black background is just grass and such in shadow + some curves tweaking (to the whole image of course). I'm not sure, really, how this will do - the topic and the challenge description don't really line up IMO, so I tried to do something that was sort of both. I certainly don't expect much from it. I have a feeling people are going to say the flower's too big.

Editing: Resized, slightly cropped, curves, levels, conversion to b&w, hue/saturation to tone, sharpening, and some light NeatImage. Border added.

this is amazing..I am not a fan of florals, but you hit the button with this one, clear and great texture, and a master job with your lighting here. I like the reflection on the surface used to hold flower. This is dark

Congrats on the top ten finish easily the best of the flower shots. I'm not normally a boarder fan but this one is perfect for the challenge, very minimalistic.

A good shot here. Lighting and focus are great. I like the b/w conversion, very well done. There is very nice detail and texture to the flower. I think the size of it is good, definitely fits the challenge IMO. Compositionally, I'm not crazy about how the flower is framed so tight into the corner, I'm wondering if it were out just a bit, it might be a much stronger presentation?

The flower is too close to the borders for my tastes. It need a little room to breathe. It would be alright where it is if the white border line wasn't there. Otherwise, very nice. Good lighting. Good for the challenge.

Borders generally don't do much for me .. but as I look at this again, it dawns on me that without the border, I wouldn't like it so much. Oh, I'd still like it -- the exposure is technically very nicely done and the details nicely evident despite the small size. What strikes me is that the border -- particularly the pale line that separates the ground from the border proper -- supports and holds the subject neatly within the frame. Deliberate or accidental ... it works and complements the subject extremely well. An already fine image is elevated by its inclusion and that's a great touch!

I would prefer the flower to be more to the right and up a bit... seems very cramped in the corner. Not sure the frame adds to the shot, but doesn't seem to detract. Nice tones.

I wish you would have made you negative space less square and more panoramic with the flower 1/3 of the way in. Nice tones

This is a nice image, and simple. I like the black background, but think a colourful flower would have worked well.

If you put the flower more on the thirds intersection, the image would be stronger then if you shoved it in the corner like you have done.

Very elegant photo. Nice soft color to the flower. Like the border. I like the fact it is on the left side instead of the right like so many others. I gave it a 7.

My 2cents worth is you have sold your self short by going black and white, color version would have been right up there. Good luck anyway
