Challenge: Accidental Letters (Basic Editing III*)
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Location: Westminster Bridge
Date: Apr 1, 2005
Aperture: 22.0
ISO: 100
Shutter: 83
Galleries: Cityscape, Urban
Date Uploaded: Apr 1, 2005

Long exposure of the London Eye.

Light streak in foreground is passing boat.

Light flashes around rim of Eye are tourists taking photos with their flash on (their pics will not come out unless they have a *really* powerful flash!).

Wish I could have spot edited - couple of dust spots on CCD are visible (have now bought cleaning kit).

Without wishing tpo be fussy, I am not sure it is just the American alphabet (if there is such a thing)... But agreed: hopefully a big "Q" for all to see. Thanks all for the further nice comments!

Great shot. I'm imressed with the patience and the sense of play that led to getting the right shot. Thanks for explaining.

When I saw this shot I experienced a strong sense of deja vu . Anyone else who experienced the same might be trying to figure out why may wish to visit //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=48814. Both images share many common strenghths. I find it instructive to compare the compositions and the techniques.

Congratulations on a blue, leaglebeagle! This was an absolutely astounding picture! I applaud your imagination...to find a Q in the structure of a ferris wheel is just incredibly creative.

Night shots in my opinion are always difficult to accomplish dead on and you have done this. As far as edits I don't know what all you have done as the voting is still going while I am commenting on this. I also relly like the reflection on the wet road. Only two things I see that bother me is how you cropped on the right so close to the building. Also the specs I see in the photo. This could be dust specs on your lense and it really hurts it. If it had not been for the dust specs I would have given you a 10. Giving you a 9 anyway.

I said road that is water. Excellent job editing. Congrats on the ribbon. When I saw this I was for sure it would ribbon. My highest scorer in this challenge. Once again congrats.

This is a nice shot. I love it. I didn't get done with all my voting so I didn't see this one but if I did you would have gotten a ten from me. Nice colors and nice contrast. Nice choice for the shoot. Congrats on first!

Many thanks to all those who have commented!

In particular, Beetle, e301, rex and photoshootme spotted my sensor dust. That dust really shows up on a long exposure using a low ISO setting. I have bought a cleaning kit...!

Tallbloke wanted to steal my technique - not sure that there is much to steal. I positioned myself on Westminster Bridge with tripod and remote wire and experimented with several long exposures, and a couple of short ones. Here is the cropped but otherwise unaltered image

As can be seen, I really only had to alter the contrast and a little saturation (as standard with a DSLR), with a tiny bit of levels and USM. I did do a Neatimage pass in an attempt to minimise the dust (which did very little).

As for sharpening - I received several comments - rayg544 thought it was sharp, gibun that it was too sharp, imagineer that it was a little soft. Myself, I think it maybe a little oversharpened, but I have noticed that any softness is always commented upon!

On composition, I agree with e301 and rex that the composition is not the best - I was a little constrained by distracting bright lights coming from City Hall on the RHS, and sensor dust on the left. I attempted several recompositions and did this one at the last minute after a big night out (maybe I should try that more often if it works)...!

For those that asked, the line on the river (not road!) was caused by a passing boat, which I quite liked (and this image was better than others for other reasons), and the two "objects" on the bottom left are the white lights with a shadow pattern created by the trees in front of them (completely invisible to the human eye - only apparent in long exposure).

Tristalisk thought that it was a bit tilted - perhaps: I straightened the image using the Shell building on the RHS as a vertical guide. I think that any tilt appears as a result of the angle, the imbalance in the lighting creating an optical illusion, or a tilt that is present in the Eye itself.

For saracat, here is an outtake showing the London Eye without the motion blur (it is very slow in reality):

I am very pleased that the various technical glitches (glaring to me!) did not hold everyone back on the voting front. Thanks again!

A brilliant capture - 83 seconds - lots of patience. The fact that there is no light on the spokes is surprising but produced a fabulous effect. Congratulations on the blue, well deserved. Ignore the Pet Portrait result, our humour doesn't travel well!

Very nice image and congrats on the win! I'd like to see a study (over a weekend or so, a few hours every evening) of what time and what location the flashes went off at. I would think that they most often go off round sunset, and as your shot shows, at the top of the wheel. Well done!

Nice idea - excellent title. Image is a little soft and it seems you have a dirty sensor. How odd that people actually think their flashes will be useful from the Eye! (Yes, they could be taking snaps of each other inside but I'm not giving them benefit of doubt.)

We need a lens or sensor clean here? Shame the basic rules prevent cloning out of those spots. Great title - made me smile straight off. This must be a hellish long exposure - just looking at that light trail across the water. The spots at the top of the travel of the eye are presumably the flashes of automatic cameras? I'm no fan of this very straightforward composition, though - I think I would personally have balanced it in frame more with the shell building to its right - that conjunction here leaves the entire image feeling kind of weighted to the right.

Composition: 8, Technical: 9, Appeal: 10, Challenge: 10, Overall Calculated Average Score: 9

Certainly ought to be a ribbon IMO. It's arguably more of an "O" than a "Q" but that's neither here nor there. Composition a bit static, sharpness a bit less than spot-on. Fine shot.

Incidentally, since I was ranking this one very highly anyway, i used it to test the "voting tool" that someone has posted to the forum., to see how it worked. I don't actually vote this mechanically, I do it a little more wholiistically. Your image struck a chord with me and i scored it very high :-)

04/06/2005 05:04:02 AM
The idea is really good and would have worked beautifully. But I think in an attempt to get rid of the noise (in camera or after) from the long exposure, the image has actually lost it's impact.

A well spotted Q together with pretty colors and glittering lights make this a very pleasant photo.
