Took over 100 shots to get this (that silver reflects everything!!). Used only an onboard hotshoe flash, some whiteboard for bouncing, and a homemade diffuser -- in my mini tabletop studio (craftsman workbench in a closet).

I know this is an old pic, but I'm new to dpchallenge and discovered this picture while trying to 'learn'. I'm trying to recreate a similar setup to photograph jewelry and a minolta lens to sell on ebay. What type of lens did you use? What was your existing lighting (in your closet)? I have a canon digital rebel with a 50mm 1.8 lens. I'm selling my minolta slr, lens, and some jewelry so I can buy a 70-200 2.8L to photograph my son's sports. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Great shot. Find it in our "How'd They Do That?" section...

Thanks guys! If you look at my "how'd they do that" for this picture, you'll get the title. Basically they're saying the watch looks like it's worth $859 and you're only paying $189 for it, thus $670 saved.. :)

Congrat to you Joe.
You did a wonderful job here and your hard work paid off.

05/12/2002 10:50:00 PM
Excellent ad! No complaints here, I think it's just about perfect.
05/12/2002 08:31:00 PM
So nicely shot. Beautifully crisp, looks like you just scanned it right out of a magazine.
05/12/2002 06:45:00 PM
great detail, great lighting, great clarity - great photo!
05/12/2002 05:21:00 PM
A really great shot that draws you into the product.
05/12/2002 02:00:00 PM

05/11/2002 04:34:00 PM
Very nice shot! Nice depth of field.

Excellent. Very crisp. Hey aren't watches suppose display 10:10. anyway good enough for a high score.
05/10/2002 12:21:00 AM
Sold! Very "clean" picture. Nice job.
05/09/2002 02:48:00 PM
Wow! Fantastic shot, great depth of focus.
05/09/2002 12:35:00 PM
Great great shot. Awesome use of focus, and amazing detail in the face of the watch. The framing and composition, the coloring, the lighting... I don't know what to say. This is well done, and could easily be used in a catalog as-is.
05/09/2002 09:09:00 AM
VERY NICE!!
05/09/2002 04:08:00 AM
Gotta raise your score. Just a perfectly lit macro - not easy with all that chrome, and the angle was a great choice. Very effective DOF, etc., etc. Okay, one nit - the blur on the second hand detracts in a tiny and insignificant way.
05/08/2002 09:52:00 PM
perfect
05/08/2002 09:38:00 PM
Nice detail!
05/08/2002 05:42:00 PM
this is beautifully photographed, great lighting, sharp focus, and the tilted angle thing is really working. this is, hands down the best shot in this weeks submission. bravo!!!
05/08/2002 05:24:00 PM
Excellent photo. Great Detail and no light flares! Very Professional.
05/08/2002 03:26:00 PM
It's perfect! I can't find anything wrong with it. The angle really completes it.
05/08/2002 01:43:00 PM
Great title!
05/08/2002 07:41:00 AM
simple and elegant. Well done. Watch out for the dark reflections
05/08/2002 06:14:00 AM
Great shot. I have been trying to get a shot like this but get impatient with the lighting..................
05/08/2002 04:30:00 AM
Well done!
05/07/2002 11:13:00 PM
Very nice detail, great angle, and nice framing. I'd be interested to see how you got such nice, soft lighting... especially where the back of the watch seems faded into the background.
05/07/2002 07:13:00 PM
fantastic detail and depth of field. Love the blue on the buttons and the whole shot. The 'standard' view is hands at 10 to 2 though ... :) gives a more balanced view - 5 past 4 might have worked for this tilt..
05/07/2002 04:27:00 PM
Technically perfect shot. This is amazing. The slogan is the only detractor.
05/07/2002 04:21:00 PM
very, very nice, beautiful detail - I want this!!
05/07/2002 12:35:00 PM
Nicely done!
05/07/2002 08:34:00 AM
Good detail, well lit, nice job
05/07/2002 06:24:00 AM
It's a great shot.. looks like a catalog photo... not sure if that's good or bad tho... its not fresh..
05/07/2002 04:32:00 AM
Very, very professional shot. I can't see a single fault.
05/07/2002 02:00:00 AM
looks straight out of a magazine! 10.
05/07/2002 12:41:00 AM
nice watch
05/06/2002 10:42:00 PM
wow. beautiful photo. this looks very professional and could appear in a magazine. also, nice title.
05/06/2002 07:51:00 PM
Everything is great about the shot. I especially like the blue knobs showing up like that. The watchmaker should hire you! After the challenge is over and you have won, please explain the title.
05/06/2002 07:19:00 PM
Nice marco shot, I like the all white background too, it really goes well with both the challenge and with the color of the watch. Beats the heck out of my Fossil
(added), this is one of 2 tens I have given, definitely should place!
05/06/2002 05:51:00 PM
Excellent technical shot. Great lighting, DOF, clarity & composition. I like tha fact that the watch has some element of color to it (the little blue knobbies). 10.
05/06/2002 05:31:00 PM
Very clear watch face. I like it.
05/06/2002 04:50:00 PM
Very very clean! Love the DOF.
05/06/2002 04:43:00 PM
do you work for the home shopping chanel by any chance.........
really nice sharp crisp image
05/06/2002 03:02:00 PM
I must have one, not sure if I would like wearing one but the ad makes me want one.
05/06/2002 02:27:00 PM
Excellent work. I really like the use of shallow depth of field in this photo. The blurred back side of this watch band doesn't distract my attention from the face of the watch. The angle of this shot also makes it very appealing. The lighting looks great as well. This photo should score in the top of the rankings in this challenge! Good work!
05/06/2002 01:53:00 PM
Great photo, very clear! Cute title, but I don't get it. Photo 10 Advert 9 Creativity 7 total 8
05/06/2002 01:33:00 PM
egads, i hope you win because i want to know how you did the lighting!!! on the how'd they do that page...
05/06/2002 12:35:00 PM
Beautifull sharp and detailed photo with wonderfull reflections. Well done!
05/06/2002 11:55:00 AM
Well done, clean, crisp. I'll take two.
05/06/2002 07:28:00 AM
Very good clarity and good sales pitch. I'd like to have the name on the face of the watch more readable though.
By the way, nice watch. Where can I get one?
05/06/2002 06:45:00 AM
i bet i know who took this. it has that clean lighting that particular person is known for ;) .. great pic, fab DOF, and perfect white balance.
05/06/2002 05:09:00 AM
Very attractive. Great use of background and focus. I would buy it.
05/06/2002 05:02:00 AM
I'll take two ! I have a coupon for on the wrist:) AWESOME photo ! GREAT job !!! Now how did you do the lighting and background ? I can't wait to hear.
05/06/2002 04:25:00 AM
I love the shallow depth of field. Nice work.
05/06/2002 04:06:00 PM
nice detail two tens in a row
05/06/2002 03:21:00 PM
Very simple, but very nice. I love the crisp detail in the watch face.
