Date Uploaded: Feb 21, 2005

I did not have any clothing, etc. from back then--and, yes, I could have had some hipppy clothing. But, I did have my boyfriend and he was a Black Panther Party Member--so we revisited the 1970s together with this photo.

I can understand your photo getting a 6 or even a 5 - DPC voters are tough! I am willing to bet, however, that the person who gave you a 1 either didn't actually look at your photo, looked at your photo but doesn't vote based upon a photo's merit, or worse, let their personal/political agenda vote. Congrats on the ribbon!

Congrats on your ribbon but the photo deserved better. Its a great shot and very real. . . .
03/07/2005 12:56:29 AM
Befitting that time era with great punch(lol) and zest. Congratulations on your yellow.

Thank you all for your comments--I am thrilled with my first ribbon. Believe me I feel humbled being a member of a photography website that exhibits such amazing talents week after week. I often feel I have learned something and then discover I have to keep learning the same thing over and over again. It is often frustrating and sometimes I just want to stop, but DPC keeps challenging me. Having lived during the 70s I wanted to portray something of substance that came from that period. It was a real enlightment period--a waking up from old ways and a stumbling search for the new. I am glad that someone who lived it ribboned--and I'm really glad it was me. I so enjoy DPC and appreciate every week this method of creative expression--thanks again.

Congrats on your yellow ribbon, I voted this a 6 and thought it was a very clear, crisp photo. The topic is very seventies and the hard work you put in has paid off...I really enjoyed looking through your profile ! Keep it up !
03/02/2005 03:26:31 AM
Great idea, a profile from the 70s, which is not clishe, and more abstract to capture
The 70 where much more than hippies and drugs and this photograph honours those people who where actively involved in making a difference

Congrats!

Very appropriate picture for this challenge, quite deserving of its ribbon. For what it's worth, it was one of my top picks :)

Great capture of the times!

Just noticed one thing... wussup with the cool modern glasses!?

Still, this is a great image, very reminiscent of this iconic capture:

Im not rasist, but european, and in my country weren´t so many coloured/black people in the 70/80s so I cant say I relate so much with the picture in this way....

But indeed, I have seen movies, and readed a bit of history :) so I get the point! :)

Cool Picture... but somethings wrong... Im not sure, could be the lighting though.

Another aprouch would it be, a black man with white dress, and the magazine, or cover he got now, or... I guess he needs to wear only black clothes... hmm...

Anyways.. Ill give it a 9 ;)

Initially I rated this photo quite favorably, but over the past twenty-four hours, I've come back to it time and time again. In the end, considering the "ruling" imagery, the excellent composition and the exacting b&w tones, I upgraded it to a ten. Wish I could have made it a ten plus.
02/26/2005 11:33:04 AM
So much anger. The end of civil behavior - you got the gist of it. The angle of the model's body against that fence illustrates that. Can't say "Nice Photo!", but can say "well-done!"
02/26/2005 11:23:04 AM
Propaganda i protesta
02/26/2005 02:10:01 AM
Edgy. Superb b&w. In the spirit of the challenge.
02/25/2005 07:35:24 AM
Very nice photo...brings back memories of the 70's. Nice textures, and interesting lighting. Too bad you lost the detail in the button. <7>
02/25/2005 07:13:45 AM
Pushing the contrast up would have helped this shot. And I think you may have been able to get your point across without the "Black Panther" (Booklet?? Flyer??) Tho well done non the less. 7
02/24/2005 07:42:41 PM
a nice message, but looks too 'posed' for my liking. I would have preferred if the subject was facing his left, not looking right into the lens.
02/24/2005 06:07:05 PM
Strong statement !
02/24/2005 06:02:05 PM
The Black Panthers..hmmm it's a good image but considering the subject, I think you could really evoke more emotion from both your subject and your audience. 6
02/24/2005 02:58:03 PM
I would have liked it w/o the paper as well
02/24/2005 02:17:40 PM
My favorite of the challenge by far. 10
02/24/2005 11:56:49 AM
Nice shot, great tones, lighting, setup. Very 70's and the fight for everyone wanting to be equal. Good luck
02/24/2005 09:15:01 AM
Fits the challenge well, nice shot too.
02/23/2005 08:55:39 PM
Powerful shot! It is very evocative of that era; great in black and white...
02/23/2005 08:26:49 PM
Awesome pic, my favorite
02/23/2005 08:22:50 PM
nice work but the elbow is cutted...i think the b&w is a great respect for the theme.Nice subject!
02/23/2005 05:32:56 PM
Interesting idea. 7
02/23/2005 02:59:58 PM
Not much to improve on here, great pic (10)
02/23/2005 01:40:59 PM
Bold artistic statement. Now this hits the 70's with real POWER! Shame about the reflection in the glasses. When you print this, I would stamp out the reflection. Great job.
02/23/2005 01:26:57 PM
Good subject. He really fits the stereotype. well done. One of my highest ranking.
02/23/2005 12:59:58 PM
great job 9
02/23/2005 08:57:11 AM
"Fight The Power!" Great Shot! The model's expression is right on point.
02/23/2005 02:34:06 AM
I like it a lot!
