Challenge: Self-Portrait III (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Sony DSC-V1
Location: San Jose, Ca
Date: Feb 7, 2005
Aperture: 2.8
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/160 sec.
Galleries: Portraiture, Action
Date Uploaded: Feb 7, 2005

Basic setup: camera on a short (1') tripod on a six-foot ladder in my back yard. Overcast day. Used a 0.7x wide-angle lens with a self-timer, and did a lot of jumping around before I got this one.

I freely admit to having photoshopped the bejesus out of this. Lots of burning in the corners and generally on the areas outside of my body; cloned out several small distracting elements (leaves and flowers in the grass, a hose at the base of the tree, a metal lock on the cabin in the background); dodged my eyes (which were originally very dark) and the highlights on my chest and face; adjusted the greens to make them somewhat less saturated and more yellow; duplicated the background and added a slight zoom blur centered on me; etc etc, ending with NeatImage.

I edited this one far more than any other submission I've made. I may get knocked down for it because the sort of blatant photoshopping I've done tends to be unpopular here, but I think the filters make for improvements. Ideally, I would have had a less busy background, yet with more texture detail. Also, the image looks good on my LCD laptop screen, but way dark on normal tube monitors. I don't think I'm able to work out a compromise that looks good on both. This may not do nearly as well as I want it to.

My girlfriend said this makes me look like Loki. I think that's a good thing- high impact, no?

Crossing my fingers :)

How did I ever miss this? It's excellent. It has a weird futuristic appeal. The colors and movement is wonderful!!!

You reminded me of this in the forums. The name I was thinking of was "Sideshow Bob".

I hope this didn't offend you...it was meant as a lighthearted note to preface my comment that I liked the different tact of this shot and how it came out in general!

Here's some pictures of him, in case you haven't seen him. I guess it's just the way your hair was positioned.

An outstanding image with great dynamic strength. It is both funny and highly entertaining. and in a class all by itself. Bumping up.

Returning for comment: In this position, you reminds me of a character from the Simpsons, I dont remember his name--the sidekick of the clown. An interesting take on a self portrait, I like it.

Kickass capture! Love the smooth colors, the green grass is phenomenal looking. I can't tell if you're a foot in the air or firmly planted on the ground. Excellent photo. 10!
