Challenge: Light (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Location: Grand Falls, NB
Date: Jan 24, 2005
Aperture: F27
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/60 sec
Galleries: Still Life
Date Uploaded: Jan 24, 2005

Just reproducing a shot I did for my Photo-A-Day on January 15. I set the aperture to F27 to make the background completely black. The background is actually just my basement lit with regular tungsten 100W bulbs. The small aperture doesn't let enough light in to show the background. The golf ball was resting on the head of a screw. I used a tube made of black paper taped to the front of my 550EX flash (on a tripod) fired by my ST-E2 wireless transmitter. Cloned out a few little distractions.

The star bursts are created by a small aperture.

I'd prefer an even narrower angle so that there's only the specular reflection from one "crater." I really like the idea!

Very nice and creative shot. Nice focus, lighting and composition. Black area is smooth and the highlights are no blown. Great Job 9

Mr. Jacko, great shot even seeing it the 2nd, 3rd ... whatever the 10th time. Looks like you must have used a star filter and some good lights. I still like this shot quite a bit and hope it does well. Good Luck.

I really like the star effects created by the light reflecting in the golf balls dimples...very effective and smart entry.

Technically very good, and of course its challenge related qualities are excellent. Maybe the starburst effect is a tiny bit overdone? But no, maybe it's just right. There are a few small distractions visible in some of the dimples ... manufacturing irregularities? Try switching to the Titleist Pro VI; great distance and nice smooth dimples. Score 7

What a great idea and a great simple image. I bet you could make a mint with this one in the right setting. What a great golf logo that would make.

Sunrise on Planet Titleist? While golf balls don't generally make interesting subjects, this one is a clear exception. Quite a lovely exposure. 7
