Took me yonks to get this even half near right. First getting the effect right was time consuming, once I had the idea, the composition was difficult to say the least (it was a self portrait too which didn't help). Once I had got that down, the lighting was also difficult - 5 heads = 5 flashes of the flash which end up making some parts brighter than others, or showing in the corners and ruining the black effect, so this too equally as long.

Finlay had something OK, but there were some lens flare marks right in an awkward position which were spot edited out by a lengthy curve, levels, curve, levels scenario. Took about 1/2 an hour to get those buggers out, although it's still not perfect.

That's all really I hope no one will go 'that's just a multiple exposure, not ground breaking' as it isn't.

Obviously it's set on bulb (at around 7-14 seconds) and a flash was fired manually with my own hands (poor mans strobe - using the test button)

A self portrait in every sense.

Wow! Entries like this are what this challenge was all about to me. This is such a cool image, so much to look at in your composition kind of like a serious pop art style. Ground Breaking to me...must go in my favorites. Congratulations on a fine entry.

Hey Jon: Congratulations on your top 10 finish. This is certainly an outstanding example of multiple exposure with lots of character. Taking this as one of my favs.

Congrats on another top 10, Jon! I gave this one an 8. You're one of the photographers I admire most on this site- the consistently high quality of your photos is just remarkable. Keep it up!

Good technical quality, simple. Nicely done.

Is a stroboscopic portrait breaking new ground? Probably not, but this is good, so you can have a 10.
01/23/2005 11:35:56 PM
Strobe is not a ground breaking technique by its self, but I think you've put more into it to so that it fit the challenge nicely. You've used the strobe to create a true portrait that convays emotion the way a single shot wouldn't. Well done, you got my first 10 for the challenge.

Very cool. I like the effect of the rotation.

I've been playing with this kind of shot myself recently.

Very interesting technique, from head on to profile in one shot. Looks good.

something wrong about the rhytm for my sense..but still a nice experiment

One of the best multiple face shots. The white shirt sets things off wonderfully, and the arc in the transition is well done
01/20/2005 09:02:57 PM
A very good effect with great lighting to bring out subject. Bumping up.
01/20/2005 08:20:04 PM
Cool effect. I need to learn how to do that.

This shot minus the second (from the left) exposure would come off much more cleanly, but the overlapping of the two at left comes out (at least to me) as muddled and distracting rather than interesting.

looks like somebody was having fun.... nice job with the lighting and focus.

excellent idea, i like the black suit white collar

Not an innovative idea but extremely well done. One of my favorites.

Best photo of its type in the challenge. Near perfect composition, perfect lighting.
01/19/2005 05:52:54 PM
Fine work. Good showmanship on part of the subject. Aedequate lighting with delicious tonal details in the range between shadows and midtones. A convinvingly effective play, which does not lean toward trivia. The title, too, is dry and fitting.

This is fantastic. Not exactly a new technique but you did a great job with this. It really has a picasso sort of feel. I will be very surprised if this doesn't ribbon. 10
01/19/2005 04:12:16 PM
I like it.
01/19/2005 02:40:32 PM
Good Photo and it looks like you really tried a new technique.. - 7

Jonpink ? I have your other portrait ( b/w) in my favorites and this one is nicely done too.
01/19/2005 01:01:04 PM
I like the idea a lot but the profile of the ear and the very noticeable nostrils are a bit unflattering due to the direction of the light - the last profile shot is realy neat and so is the general composition and color
01/19/2005 12:06:36 PM
excellent!
01/19/2005 07:07:26 AM
I really like this effect! This is a great way to add calculated motion to a still photo. Very nice job!
