Challenge: Breaking New Ground (Basic Editing III)
Collection: Challenges
Camera: Canon EOS-10D
Location: home
Date: Jan 16, 2005
Aperture: 13
ISO: 100
Shutter: 10 sec w/strobes
Galleries: Humorous, Persuasive
Date Uploaded: Jan 16, 2005

This is a double exposure, exposing one half of sensor at a time.

A lot of curve work. Uncreased the dark end and tweaked the red, blue and green.levels, hue sat. Converted to JPEG and applied curves again. This last step is needed to eradicate the intensity of the line. As you note there is a decrease in image quality.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Set up: glass on wine balanced on wood over pail. Wine glass is empty and covered with lid. Have two filled bottles with air hole above center. One with wine and other with water.
First exposure, top half of sensor. Open shutter and pour wine as it hits lid on glass. Trigger the strobes by hand. Second exposure: remove lid and close top barn door and open bottom. Pour wine inro glass(angle hot or miss, 30 takes) release strobes. Finished. This is same exposure box I used for Split Bout.

Man, my digital camera broke about 2 months ago. I have kinda fallen off on voting, and paying attention to dpchallenge in general. But after seeing the effort you put into explaining this shot, I decided to log in and comment. Great shot. I'm surprised you did it in 30 exposures. The lines are absolutely perfect.
Thanks for taking the time to explain this wonderful shot.

Nicely done - result!

Reading your recent post though, I really think you should have called it 'Water to Wine'. The long-winded, descriptive titles never look nice after the challenge is over.

WOW! This is definately BNG! How on earth... The only thing I can imagine is that the water that comes from the bottle is actually red and when there's no more red liquid the white one follows. Something with two liquids that don't blend. Well, I'll have to check your comments after voting. 9. (The background needs some more colour).

  Photographer found comment helpful.
01/19/2005 03:12:04 PM
It has wit and a little humour, is sensibly and effectively composed and reveals no flagrant technical flaws. Unfortunately, this image relies almost entirely on the miracle of water-to-wine without conveying anything miraculous aesthetically. Its visual ambience remains cold and, perhaps, as dull as an illustration for a winery, drawn from a stock agency.

I am rating this capture accordingly, while adding two points: one to compensate for the limits imposed with regards to editing by the Basic Challenge rules, another for the title. The title, to me, clearly places this photo into a known context, and it does this without, overtly, soliciting a favourable perspective.

I think this image looks slightly better with a white background rather than a grey one. Very interesting effect. I look forward to reading about how you achieved the transition.

This is great. a good capture, and certainly shows inivation.
I've been racking my brain for some time on this one, I think there is a hint in the change in backgroung on a slight diagonal at the intesection between the red and the clear.
Now I need to think what colour you started with....
  Photographer found comment helpful.
01/19/2005 09:24:49 AM
This is such a great idea (and innovative too)...it's a shame the lighting and background weren't more magical...seems almost stale, as opposed to miraculous.

Still, one of the truly unique photos in the challenge..good job!
