My son's dog, Pongo, has so many unusual markings! He was the perfect subject for this challenge.

Greetings from the Critique Club };-)

Initial thoughts
Congrats on the ribbon! , meets the challenge, lighting could be better.

Composition/ Content
The thing that grabs you about the shot is the expression on Pongo's face. It really tells a story. The "9" stands out quite well. Black and White was an excellent choice.

Technical
Focus seems good and contrast is excellent for the difference in light and shadow you have here. You seem to have a knack for portraiture which in opinion is one of the toughest parts of photography. I disagree that you should have cropped this differently, I think it is great. The only thing I would like to see improved is the lighting. I think a reflection onto to the back of Pongo's head would have outlined it a little better and made the "flashiness" on his face a little less harsh.

My Opinion On The Photo
I originally scored this shot a seven as did the most voters. I think that it really meets the challenge well but I had a problem with the lighting which didn't really appeal to me. Fantastic job, and keep up the good work.

I would be happy to talk further about this shot if you would like to contact me.

Pongo is wonderful. Not only was he perfect for the challenge, just look at that sweet look in his eyes. The lighting is very good. Nothing could improve the picture.

Perfect!

That's really an excellent shot. I love how you only see half his face, and the rest fades to black background.

Congratulations on a well deserved 2nd place finish!

Wow, thanks! I was just hoping to finally beat a 4! LOL! For everyone who asked, no, I didn't spray paint our dog - that is all natural. Thanks for the votes!

Good expression on this dog. and I do think the bad (flash?) lighting in this one is a plus. 9

If this doesn't take first place everyone is crazy. And it is a really great photo technically speaking. You got the number and the ability - put them together and what do you have - first place. Makes sense to me.

Super great! At first I though this was just another cliche shot. Then, I saw the light (the "9" actually). Now it is as plain as day. Great work. Nice portrait. Good luck with the challenge!

And only now I see the 9. You didn't spray it on him did you? :)

Give the pup a new toy for posing very nicely.

Very clever -- I love it! Awesome title! Of course, if you spray-painted your dog... I'd have to vote a little differently :)

I love the look he's giving...and the perspective. Looks like direct flash (?) which ordinarily isn't the best, but here I think it works with his "uh oh, you caught me" expression.

Great subject!! Great eye, no pun intended. This is an excellent example of what this challenge called for and a great photo to boot. I love the expression on the dog's face. - 9 (no pun intended). To avoid the pun, I'll give you a 10

This is the best photo!! The idea behind it is great, and the title is great, and it's definately a natural number. Made me laugh out loud. I think the only thing that could be improved is if he wasn't looking at you like he wanted to bite you. lol. It's natural for him to want to look at you though, even at the angle he's facing. Focus and clarity are great on the 9. I love the dark background with lit subject. A great shot. Good luck in the challenge.

Wow, that's a pretty good "9". I'd have cropped in on his head a little more, leave the "9" on the right side of the picture.

This is the most clever of all. On top of being photographically good, the expression on the dog's face is priceless. A little like "I sneaked in here and surprised all of you' Perfect 10

Ha, that's really cool. I just hope you didn't spraypaint this on there. Great picture, good composition, and I think the lighting, though a bit weak, works very nicely.
