Challenge: Breaking New Ground (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Fujifilm FinePix S602Z
Location: Bronx Zoo
Date: Jan 13, 2005
Date Uploaded: Jan 13, 2005

Didn't expect to score this high with this one since I didn't obviously meet the challenge. To me this was groundbreaking. I set out with the plan to capture a zoo shot that wasn't a typical zoo shot with animals just sitting around. I wanted something dynamic and wild. I was also experimenting with a tritone to give a cold winter feel on some of my landscapes and I thought it would be perfect for this photo. The secret is to go to the zoo on a cold rainy day after a lot of snow when nobody is around, pick an animal, and stick around for about 3 hours until they do something. Needless to say, I have a lot of polar bear photos. It was nice that I had this one as a clear favorite of the bunch. Deciding what to submit is usually such a dilema for me. I'll be uploading some of the others later this week.

You almost gave me a heartattack with this photo! I would've probably died from one had this been taken in the wilderness. Stunning photo!

Beautiful photo. I have a hunch that I would like this photo better in color, but I haven't seen the color version so I don't know. Nice stop action.

This is an amazing photograph and a great testament to your skill and patience. The back wall isn't the best background, but the bears more than make up for it - their sheer physical presence and power is stunning. What a payoff huh!

I love these rare/beautiful types of moments captured in complete stillness.
Congrats, you have caught something so much photographer spend days/weeks trying to capture.

An amazing piece of work.

This phot is unbelievable. I couldn't tell it was a zoo shot but I would love to have been the photographer.

I know it isn't luck, it is deserved. When I would get a rare shot I would tell people I was lucky. But after thinking about it, I paid my dues by shooting every chance I got, so I deserved (earned) the photograph.

Congrats.

JPR, I did a doubletake when I read that you took this at the Bronx Zoo of all places. I'm rarely impressed with "zoo shots", but this is incredible. I have to get up to da Bronx before the temps thaw...

I suspected this was a zoo shot even though it is an extremely "realistic" depiction of a natural shot -- it really makes no difference except for your safety. I wish it wasn't missing quite so much of the left bear, but it's a (very) minor point. Great work!

Are you interested in publishing your tritone formula?

This is too good to be true.... If this is for real, and not a shot of a poster/wall, this is clearly the winner. Actually, I don't care if this is real or not, this is the coolest image I've seen in a long time. Thanks. 10 none the less, congrats on the blue ribbon.

01/20/2005 03:59:07 AM
Wow, this is such a great shot - one of the best i have ever seen on DPC - in fact probably the best.

However, it seems like you know you had a decent image, and needed to find a way to submit it to a challenge. Not really anything here indicative of a ground breaking technique or even style. I can lean toward the style aspect with it's coloring I guess..but wouldn't be surprised if that was a Photoshop job rather than camera technique (hope not)

Will be interesting to see how this fairs.

Regardless, this is a wonderful image, and one that i expect to be seen in many peoples favorites. You got mine.
